Pulling it together

Thought I’d show you what is going on in my new place. First let me say that the carpet is going. YUK!!!!! I have ordered a room size coir rug. Everything here is thrifted, bought on etsy, found in secondhand shops or through retro dealers except the screen which is from an interior design student exhibition from my university days. This is not how the room will look, just an idea. Wait till you see the travertine, chrome and glass coffee table I have coming. I’m going for a Wary-Meyers retro boho look with lime green, navy and a clash of chrome and gilt. I am trying to pull this all together on a strict budget and with mainly thrifted finds because a)I want to show that it can be done, b)I believe in reuse and recycling and c) I’m broke at the moment! Check out my Flickr for more explanations.

And here’s what prompted me to post this now. I found this couch on Chez Fifi through a link I found on Absolutely Beautiful Things today. A red suite similar to my now navy blue suite. Small world!

Where did you get that frame? I seriously want that frame 🙂

Jany that was probably the most expensive item there as I bought it at a retro shop. Anna the chair I’ve only picked up recently and just finished painting. The 3 piece set was $150 from my favourite thrift store. Carrie the frame is one of two that I have had for at least 15 years. They were $70 each at the time which I gladly paid. They’ve been in every living room I’ve had since. The best finds were the fabric and that amazing green lamp. All bargains!

The chair, the lamps, the print, that frame and the fabric. I’m loving it all. Can’t wait to see the whole thing. I’m from Brisbane and I can’t believe you found it all here.

Peggy says:

Jo, your style is so totally different than my own. Love lime green, but not really navy. Don’t really like patterns or chrome…but…somehow it looks like it is really working for you. The midcentury lamp is perfect as is the print (?) in the frame. Can’t wait to see more of your place. Just make sure you fill it with some of your paintings too! I am dying to see what the green painting with the white vases will look like finished.

melissa says:

are those some of those acrylic grapes from the 60’s? love it!

Ryce says:

What a lovely — and interesting — collection of things. I’m especially taken with the print, which kind of reminds me of the work of John Hollingsworth, and the acrylic grapes — such fun! Am looking forward to seeing how you pull all of this together!
You and Kim have a truly inspiring blog.

Amanda says:

I think I know where you are going with this but I could never pull something like this together. Please post more pictures when you are finished.

The bright green grapes are acrylic ones from the 60s. I love them so much. I have spies everywhere looking out for more. I’ll post pictures as the room comes together. Thanks for your comments guys!!!

Keeping aside the technicalities, I already have a feeling of being at home, in an Indian home!

I see the potential. Can’t wait to see it all when you’re done. Thrifting is so much more fun than box store buying. Even if I become independently wealthy I will still buy thrift. 🙂
