Some beauty amidst the chaos

Over the weekend I did something I have wanted (and needed) to do for a long time. I bought an iMac. It’s my first Mac and while the most beautiful piece of technology on the planet, I want to pull my hair out as I have no freaking idea how to do anything. With a programming background and someone who spends every waking moment on a computer (it seems), this is super duper frustrating and is going to take some time to get used to. I set myself up in the non-insulated office at the back of my house now that the weather is getting warmer and I snapped a couple pics of the thrown-together space which I hope to stick up on my page in the near future. Since I don’t have all the programs I need up and running yet, my posts may not be as frequent this week as I would like. Anyhoo, I managed to get some photos ready for this post (without too much of a disaster) that I found in the portfolio of Swedish stylist Saša Antić. He has a great eye for detail and creates magazine-worthy vignettes – go figure as he’s styled for all of my favourite Swedish and British mags.

Hang in there! I am a Mac lover, but they are not as "intuitive" as one might assume from the advertising. If you have an Apple Store nearby it would be worth taking an hour to have someone go over the basics. Basic stuff like clicking on the little red button in the top left doesn't shut down the program, just closes the window. (To shut down the program hit "command Q"
I'm sure in a month you will love it!

so jealous over all the cabinet space in that kitchen!!

I think the way that bird was positioned on those orange boxes is really sweet and I like the mirrored drinks cabinet! P.S. You'll be in love with your mac in no time, I felt the same way when I got mine and I've had it nearly 5 years and it's still working just fine! I'm always learning new things about it too, macs are sooo much easier!

i just bought a macbook as well! i'm glad someone feels the same way i do! while i'm not a programmer, i work in the e-commerce industry and use [a PC] everyday and can usually figure things out pretty quickly as it's usually very intuitive.

i hear macs are supposed to be super user-friendly, so i started wondering if i'm OVER thinking things! everything is taking me doubly long to figure out and it is very frustrating. i'm sure as nadine mentioned, it will get easier and we'll love it, but i was still so surprised that it would take me this long to figure out and that it would be so frustrating. well, thanks for sharing and i feel your pain!

My iMac is one purchase that I have never regretted. I. Love. My. Mac. And I hope he loves me right back!

There's a fabulous free yahoogroups for mac users to help with the transition / any sort of help questions. macunplugged@yahoogroups.com is, I think, the address. The volunteers there are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable.

Like you, I switched from years of PC ownership, where I could write a lot of basic stuff, program, and it took me about a week to get used to the Mac, about two to really feel like I knew where everything was. But I love it–wouldn't go back if they paid me.

(First time commenter; love your site.)

I have to say that I am getting the hang of this Mac. There are still some keyboard shortcuts I have to learn and it still drive she a little nutty that the command key is so close to C and V…..but it's such a thing of beauty that it makes staring at the screen all those hours so much more bearable.

(Thanks for commenting toni!)
