An architect’s beach house

Posted on Thu, 24 Jan 2013 by KiM

Located in a townhouse in Paraty, Rio de Janeiro, the beach house of the architect Fernanda Marques needed some finishing touches like darken the floor, change lighting and paint the walls. She adorned the house with a seaside decor, but very stylish and contemporary taste. Among the pieces selected to give color to the refuge of the architect, she opted for a chair of the Dutch designer Oskar Zieta, a work of Hugo France, in the garden, and Tapestry of Calder sisal and poems by Carlos Drummond de Andrade. When it came to the garden, Fernanda was the one who cared for each piece of it, with various species of plants to give more life to the house. A beautiful combination of modern and natural elements, coming together to create the perfect beach house.

Cool space

“Sliding interior and exterior panels dramatically transform the living areas from open plan to intimate and discreet. The balcony features a sliding cedar screen that filters the more intense summer sun and allows the house to breath.”

Clever design by Kerstin Thompson Architects (KTA). Inside and out, open and closed.

When architecture and its surrounding landscape combine magic happens. When a building addresses its site the experience of the space is heightened, enriched. A limited palette of materials, concrete flooring, blocks and timber accents are a counterfoil to that view, stunning glimpses through native trees to Bass Strait. The House at Big Hill by Melbourne based Kerstin Thompson Architects (KTA) draws the occupant through its dark, triangular space towards the vista while light and shadow cocoon and envelop the interiors.

I honestly don’t know why I’m so enthralled with the dining space above. Maybe it’s because I’ve never seen small kitchen appliances look so good on display.
This is going into my inspiration folder. Via Marianne Evennou

I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOOOOVE French interior designer Marianne Evennou‘s style. It’s typical European modern with all of my favourites like Tolix chairs and Jieldé lights. The warm, earthy colours add more drama to the already dramatic architectural features – and whoa, check out the tile flooring. Gorgeous.
