Stephen Sills

Posted on Tue, 29 May 2018 by KiM

New York’s Stephen Sills Associates does it all – exterior and interior architecture, exterior and interior lighting and landscape design, in addition to interior design. His style has an aura of grandeur, elegance and sophistication with earthy elements and calming colours to keep things grounded. Whether it be a Manhattan penthouse or a country retreat, they all speak volumes of his love for design and turning spaces into art.

Stalking 2

Our second real estate stalking takes us to Sydney and the inner city suburb of Paddington. It’s no secret that I love a Victorian-era terrace house and although this renovation has taken a decidedly modern turn there are still traditional elements to keep me happy. I’d love to see the bathroom in real life. Part of me loves the glass panels over the original sandstone in the shower but part of me also wonders how well it has been done. Are there dust bunnies gathering on rock ledges or salts frissing out of stone due to niggling leaks? Still it’s a cool idea. Link here while it lasts.

Stalking 1

All prim and proper, solid and traditional out the front, slick and modern out the back. I’m stalking a renovated home in the Melbourne suburb of Malvern and it’s my favourite type of renovation … a sensitively restored facade with a fun open plan family addition to the back. A small back yard isn’t so much of a drawback when stylish landscaping and easy sight lines in and out through expansive doors and cleverly placed windows blur boundaries. Link here while it lasts.

My friend Roseline sent me a message the other day that her friend’s mom passed away suddenly and her beautiful farmhouse in The Netherlands has been put up for sale. Built around 1910 on the border of the towns of Knegsel and Veldhoven, it has been renovated and rebuilt several times over the years yet still maintains a time-worn look and appears to have been given a bit of an ethnic facelift recently. This home is absolutely stunning and what a dream it would be to put my mark on such a space. Listing details can be found here.

Working on a Saturday

It’s like I always say (except not too much lately), if you have to drag yourself into work on a weekend it helps if it looks great. Today’s workspace is a first for DTI. Part pastel Haussmannian, part post modernist homage meets contemporary bespoke, all with attention to medical precision it’s a plastic surgeon’s practice by French interior designers Agence Véronique Cotrel.
