How much is too much?

I found this warehouse conversion on Location Partnership the other day and it had me cracking up. I wasn't sure whether to run away screaming or gasp in delight (although leaning much closer to running away). The site says this home is a testament to the wonderful world of kitsch. I don't even know if I'd call this kitsch - it's more just a collection of completely random vintage pieces. But maybe that's the definition of kitsch. So I goggled "kitsch" and Wikipedia says "Contemporaneously, kitsch also (loosely) denotes art that is aesthetically pretentious to the degree of being in poor taste, as well as, applying to industrially-produced art-items that are considered trite and crass." So maybe it is kitsch. :) What do you think? Love it or hate it? Would living here make you insane?

Oh My! Words fail me .... is it or isn't it?

This place makes feel claustrophobic. There's Kitsch and then there's crazy...

Oh, goodness... yes, living there would make me insane! I think the warehouse space could be really cool with a modern look with a few girly or antique pieces thrown in, but that space has just too much stuff in it! I wouldn't have done all the dark colors and busy details, and it definitely needs more work covering up electrical cords ;)

wow, this place is fascinating! :D soooo much going on.. maybe too much? hehe :D

I sorta like it. There is way too much going on and I can't imagine how crazy dusting must be ... but i like the kitsch trashy lived-in wibe.

I think I might be a hoarder. Haha.

The only thing it's missing is a fuzzy toilet lid cover!

Honestly? It looks like somethiing out of Sanford & Son

It screams "Bohemian gone wrong", as if to say "I'm living the avant garde lifestyle. Here! I'll prove it with my crazy decor!" Some of the furnishings remind me of a college kids' coffee house.

But it sure makes for a fun and entertaining post, not to mention the comments! :)

Hmmm.... just looks like a hoarder with a bunch of random crap thrown into what could be a cool warehouse loft.
To me, when I see it, I wouldn't think any of this is cool. It's just overboard, and it doesn't relate to each other at all.

I would run.... far far away!

Some of the rooms look like an eclectic antique store! I'd run!

I think it would be fun to have a friend who lived there. That way I can visit and then leave.

But I have a feeling people think of my place like that...

This place looks so dirty and grimy. The bathroom is actually the nicest part of the whole loft. I wouldn't want to touch anything! It doesn't look purposefully done in any way - more like a collection of junk!

It looks like a poorly designed antique/collection store. AGH!!!

I kinda don't mind it but would have to clear out a few things to live there myself. I'd also need to add the colour blue!

I sort of love the two photos of the kitchen with that exposed brick. You know, the only two where you can't see mounds of "collectables" and fushia. But they work. Other than that, it's reminding me of a Grey Gardens for the converted warehouse set. I'm sure there are some great pieces in there, but there's just too much going on to appreciate them.

These residents have an excellent sense of humor, in my opinion. Along the lines of the SNL skit: "Do you like luxury? Do you enjoy fine things?"

It reminds me of a lot of my artist & musician friends' spaces, which is probably why it looks comfortable to me. Sure, it doesn't look finished the way "designed" rooms do, and they probably didn't spend much on their furnishings, but I doubt that's as important as having the space to create stuff.

Scary .. how would you clean it ??

This apartment represents for me not so much kitsch as pastiche (wikipedia says that a work is pastiche if it is "cobbled together in imitation of several original works." I think that they might be trying to say something about how over-seriously we observers/consumers take design sometimes. And, moreover I think that they are addressing this in a pretty subversive way. So, in some ways, I think that what they have done is make an intentional intellectual statement using an aesthetic form, like an art installation. Having said that, I could no more live in this space than I could purchase most art installations, it takes a lot of energy and engagement to live with something so cerebral.

I think the human eye craves symmetry and editing, so that it can identify lurking dangers or nearby goodies.

This place gave me a "fight or flight" response...for some of the photos, I'm not even sure what I'm looking at..."is that a couch or a sabre-tooth tiger?" my brain wondered :^)

So I guess in that way it's cool as art. But my brain would explode if I lived there.

Although I do love that kitschy bar cabinet thing...

I like industrial but that coffee table is just wrong. I mean so wrong. But I think the people who live there may be fun and to be honest I would have it any day over a Mc mansion or a "Devine: design home etc. At least they are saying this is us and I'm sure they love it, cheers Katherine

I'm loving all the comments so far. :)

What HURTS me about this home is they have TWO peacock chairs and you can barely notice them amidst all the crap. THE HORROR!

I vote for RUN!

Run! Mind you... your place is rather kitsch too, Kim! Warning: Don't let it go too far like this! Tacky!!
