It's all in the details

What can you do if you've got a space (or in my case an entire house) that is totally lacking any sort of architectural feature? How about some beadboard, trim, chair rail, paneling, moldings! A friend at work has been hitting up my twin sister and I for some decorating ideas for her blah dining room and she mentionned wanting to do some molding on the bottom half of the walls. I told her to got for it as her dining room is a square, with a window, and that's it. I thought I'd dig up some dining rooms that have some sort of molding or paneling on the walls so she could get some ideas on how to go about it. I'm including some living rooms too because this idea is great for any room in your home (I'm pretty certain I'll be trying a chair rail in my main bathroom as soon as I get around to renovating it).

Beautiful images, designing dining rooms is one of my favorite things!

I'm sorry, am I the only one who thinks that room #4 looks like the inside of a garage door? :]

Anyone know where that gorgeous leather lounge chair is from? The one with the little rooster pillow on it? I needs it.

All those images are fabulous in their own way - great inspiration.

Hmmmm...I'm thinking that these are giving me ideas for my own dining room wall, now that I removed drywall (installed by previous owners) that covered over a window! Thanks for the great examples.

Hi Kim and Jo
Love your blog and the images are fantastic. The web is a wonderful thing. I live in Australia and last year while I was writing some interior design tutorial I discovered a brilliant young designer in South Africa. Ros has created and developed Sample Board Online. I was so impressed I have now become her Aussie partner.

One of the ways Ros decided to market SBO was via blogging. So in Jan 2010 I have started to blog. This lead me to your wonderful blog. You blog is great a true inspiration. And your story is similar to ours

I notice that most of the paint jobs here are pretty ... demure. I have a ton of molding in my house and I'm really tempted to jazz the hell out of it! For example, I have a "chair rail" around my front hall and up the stairs, with boxes beneath. I'm thinking white above, gloss white on the actual molding, and raspberry below! What do you think?

Beadboard can cure so many ills. I cannot say how completely I am over the whole 'centered table w/chairs' meme! The sofa and table idea is wonderful, as is bringing in *several* small cafe-style tables to accomodate more intimate conversational options -- and it works REALLY well for families, giving everyone a chance to connect. I've seen extra chairs hung at shelf level, and used as such until needed -- very cool. But when a room is boring, square, with an ordinary window and no view, the lighting becomes critical, and should be given thought. As this post so clearly demonstrates!

Just... avoid twee wallpaper. FGS, please!

Details make or break everything we do in life... in design is what makes an environment special and it's hard to find people who can actually design the details that a project requires... as a designer you feel very proud when you finish a project and you can say "I designed this and this and this"...
