Design Crew

Got a problem? Need some help? Just standing there shaking your head? Don't know what to do? You're not alone. Send us a link to photos of your design quandary and let the Desire to Inspire design crew help you .... that's you lot ... the readers! Carolina needs some suggestions this week.

I emailed you a few weeks ago telling you how much help your blog has been to us on decorating our new home. Here are a few photos of what we accomplished so far. We are stuck at finding the perfect dining chairs for our custom dinning table. Maybe you can help us get a little inspired. The chairs we had originally picked are not available (the factory closed). We are thinking about chairs in different colors since our walls are all white.

Now here's the table (and it is a beauty, oh be still my beating heart) ...

And here are some other shots of Carolina's house in progress. There's still a way to go but what a great start.

Know the perfect chair? Jump right in with your 2 cents worth. Links would be lovely too ;)

Beautiful table. I would go from something sleek and modern, but robust. I have a weakness for the Arper Catifa, maybe upholstered in saddle leather. It also comes in seat width 53 instead of 46 if more generous proportions work better with the table.

Nice table! I think I would choose some Panton Chairs in white an maybe one chair in black, could be funny. Love white, black and wood toghether. And I would bring some colour with a rug or art on the walls.

watch out for the cow hide defenders!
we happen to have a similar style table (solid chunk of cedar and black cast iron legs) and we have bent plywood chairs that go great with it.

First I want to say that I love the look of the Sarinen Table with the lucite chairs in the other dining area; very beautiful. For the custom wood top what about a set of the painted wishbone chairs that are now available in various colors?

my vote: black panton chairs.

I think I'd try black Windsor backed chairs.

WHERE is that table from??

I would try the Lucite chairs on either side of the wood slab and shop for fabric drama chairs on each end. The oval informal table may look nice with a deep bench running under the window, add leather wishbone style chairs around other side.

I think the concept of 'wood' has been fully covered! And the legs of the table introduce metal, so you might as well go with that.
There is always mismatching, which is charming and lightens up the vibe in a room a bit, which might work very well with such a massive and serious table. Antique school and office chairs, or modern metal Bertoia chairs in various colors (although sticking to silver, with colored cushions, perhaps in persian or Indian prints, very hip right now, would probably be a better visual)

or there are these (page down to 'mimou' and check out the yellow metal chair) which are a bit ubiquitous, but still...

I like what Oregonbird said about balancing wood and metal, and agree Bertoias would look nice, but so would the Xavier Pauchard in galvanized raw metal, with are my all time favorites! --and can´t find them in Argentina :(

I think your idea to go with colors is a good one. I would probably go with several colors of Eames side chairs, it's a look that still wins in my opinion. Any combination of colors is pleasing, the chairs are comfortable and they are 'friendly' and casual, and the material/texture is warm while still being smooth and modern. There is reason these things are ubiquitous.

I would go silver and do Emeco US Navy chairs - I love them with wood.

We have a similarly rustic table in a white walled room with these anthro curtains:

And we did some really great retro orange textured vinyl chairs we found locally. I'd say more burnt orange. I think it all looks great together!

Thank you guys for all the help!! I think we are going with eames molded plastic chairs in different colors... xoxo

I'm rather late to the party, but hope that you manage to read my post. I have a strong caution against the Eames molded pastic chair. First off, I find it to be an embarrassing chair -- for some reason (because of it's unique shape and the use of unbreathable materials), I find that when people sit on it for extended periods of time (i.e., a dinner), they leave behind embarrassing lines of sweat on the seat. Also, I think that choosing something which isn't an MCM classic will better showcase the ones you already have. Too many MCM classics in a single space, and it is gilding the lilly in the modernist sense.

I have a number of suggestions for you, my favourite being the Anziano Chair by Donghia. It has graceful swoops and swirls, and seems particularly light on its feet because of the stunning frame. It would be gorgeous in white. With all of these elements it would make a stunning contrast with the heavy, chunkiness of your table.

http://product.donghia.com/product-main.cfm?item_desc=anziano%20chair&item=90002&item_type=B&color=005&collection=furniture&category=In%20stock%20furniture&subcoll=Anziano

Other options: the Koi K2 Swivel, Dider Gomez's French Line, and the Camogli by Pierro Lissoni (webbed back, black frame). The Lissoni is particularly light and elegant, and would make a stunning contrast.
