Design crew

Got a problem? Need some help? Just standing there shaking your head? Don't know what to do? You're not alone. Send us a link to photos of your design quandary and let the Desire to Inspire design crew help you .... that's you lot ... the readers! You are coming up with some stellar ideas each week so it's time to do it all over again. This week is just a little different. Instead of room photos Brigida has sent us photos of what she has in the room. Can you make help her pull it all together? She is wrestling with a rug dilemma.

First I want to tell you that I love your blog.  I would really appreciate if you could help me with some ideas about how to combine rugs in the dining/living room. I have a rectangular open plan living room/dining room, where I want a more contemporary decoration.  Three of the walls are white and one was painted in a greyish chocolate brown. In the middle, separating the living room from the dining room, there's a rectangular column in a almost black grey.  The furniture is in dark wood (wenge), the dining table is white (lacquered) and the chairs are camel brown, similar to this one.

The sofa (with chaise long) has a sand colour, something like this, but lighter

and in the living room I have something like this

and a wenge center low table.  I also have in the living room a Corbusier chaise long brown/white/black pony like this one.

I wanted to bring some colour to the space, so I bought this gabbeh rug - the colours are more vivid than in the picture to put under the white dining room table.

I want to put a rug in the living room, but I don't know what colour will go better. I thought in a dark grey rug but don't know. Can you please give some suggestions?

Wow, you've got some great components. It would have helped to see the actual pieces and space. But, I have some similar pieces in my living and dining spaces. I also have two off-white, vintage flokatis with a colorful, thick vintage hamadan rug between them (a little like your gabbeh). I LOVE THEM! Flokatis are neutral and seem to work in almost any space. They can really warm up modern spaces that seem little cold and unwelcoming. They can also modernize historic homes and add a little funk. I have even seen fabulous vintage flokatis in shades of gray and a variety of browns. Good quality, heavy wool pieces actually repel dirt. I have two crazy dogs and several white flokatis that look absolutely pristine, despite them. A word of warning, I have not seen new ones that come close to the quality of older pieces, 1980's and older. Craigslist is a good source.
If you don't want to go the flokati route, how about a something similar to your gabbeh with some of the same colors or the same pattern with completely different colors?
Have fun and good luck!

check out IKEA. I have purchased coordinating rugs from them, similar to your current. Also look at overstock.com I purchased a flat rug made of strips of leather,---love it.

I love the suggestion from molto bene wife! Reflect the colours in the gabbeh rug but with a modern design to go with the modern furnishings. Another zebra-stripey option:

On the other hand, two rustic rugs paired with the contemporary furnishings would balance the contrast a little more. Worldmarket.com and of course ikea have lots of other similar gabbeh and kilim rugs that would go well. Here are some that I liked:

Send us pics of what you end up choosing!

Hi,
Thank you all for the suggestions.
I haven't put photos of the room, because i'm still in the process of decorating. Things are not in their place yet.
Now going to the internet look for some rugs.

Hi Brigida,
What's the name of the camel brown chair? I just love it... :-)

Hi Emma,
I used that picture, that I found in the italian ebay, to exemplify the ones that I have (that where also bought at ebay.it), and that have a similar colour and model. I went looking and I found this ones that you can look at:

http://cgi.ebay.it/SEDIA-Poltrona-M-S-Bauhaus-x-Casa-Ufficio-OFFERTA-/160555770177?pt=Sedie_e_Sgabelli&hash=item2561dea141 (this store only delivers in Italy)

http://cgi.ebay.it/SEDIA-MART-STAM-BAUHAUS-MADE-IN-ITALY-ALTA-QUALITA-/180645409439?pt=Modernariato&hash=item2a0f4e329f (delivers in Europe, and you can choose any colour)

http://cgi.ebay.it/COMODA-SEDIA-IN-PELLE-RIGENERATA-E-STRUTTURA-CROMO-/260605868413?pt=Sedie_e_Sgabelli&hash=item3cad51f97d (also delivers only in Italy)

In the Italian ebay you can find a lot of furniture design inspired. I think that that ones are inspired in Marcel Breuer chairs.
I have bought some things there, like the corbusier chaise long, despite the delivery costs are a bit expensive.

A tip: if you look for "marcel breuer chair" at google images you will find similar chairs to the image I used.

Holpe this helps you. :)

Yess, I forgott to talk about the floor. It's a wood floor, a bit lighter than the wood shown on the tv sideboard.
