A home by Andrew Maynard

Melbourne-based architect Andrew Maynard is a genius when it comes to being innovative and maximizing the site he has to work with. This home blows me away. It's a renovation of an existing Victorian terrace home in inner city Melbourne. The owners requested a large flexible area suitable for entertaining. Flexible is what they got as this design blends the indoors with the outdoors and all the windows makes it such a bright and inviting home. Love the exposed brick which warms up the space and that tiny little pool is awesome! (P.S. Jo featured his work way back in '07.)

That... was completely not what I expected. Very exciting potential in the first picture, what a marvelous building 'shell' But I can't imagine using any of the spaces, not even the courtyard! The bright, red bathroom was off-putting -- how is that possible? Go up to kick back on the balcony, and you're left to stare at a white ceiling. There is no denying that the architecture is exciting, dynamic and expressive. Big wow factor there. But it doesn't take 'human life' into consideration. But I love the old brick sheath.

This is my friend's house and sadly you don't have any pics of the best bit - the wine cellar! It really is a site to behold ...

Amazing... I suggest Kate go over to her friends house and take this wonderful photo! ;-)

Here's a link to "one of the first projects by dynamic architect Andrew Maynard", in my hood. It's "house of the week" in Domain, The Age property supplement, today.

It's rather dark in front - I drove past it today, lots of nice trees in the front garden so it's been cleverly photographed in the front of house photo. A lot less sophisticated than the one in your post. Small for a 4BR, I think. I'd repurpose one of those BRs as a study or snug.

Have a look on the architect's website, there are a few pics of the house (incl. cellar) there:

It's called "Vader house" because of the resemblance of the extension's shape to Darth Vader ;-)

I love this architect and I love the bathroom! Like a surprised box.
Maybe red is a bit too much but, what about peacock?
xx
