Ian MacDonald

I'm feeling a bit patriotic today so I thought I'd feature a Canadian architect I discovered recently. Ian MacDonald's firm is based in Toronto, and he has won a whole bunch of awards for his residential designs including three Governor General's medals and six Canadian Architect Awards of Excellence. WHOA. I am REALLY smitten with the first exterior photo below - those porthole type window pod things are such a cool idea (I see something like that on the top of a tall, narrow house).

Very cool spatial configuration on that one house. I love all of the interesting pathways/hallways that move you visually and physically throughout the house. Also, built in bookshelves and storage are a plus for me, as well as the way the architecture fits into the landscape. I'm usually not as attracted to the more modern styles, but here I liked them much better than the more traditional looking interiors. To me those weren't styled very well or very interestingly. Particularly that one shot of the dining room table. Also, shame on whoever decided to hang a piece of art behind the stove in the third picture so it can be exposed to high heat and splattered grease on a daily basis!

I'm pretty sure the third picture from the bottom is located just streets away from my house. So cool!

I weep, that this isn't the standard to which all new architecture is held. Better houses make better people. (Yes, I believe that. On the large scale, at least.)

I'm pretty sure that's just a piece of nice wrapping paper in a frame. As such, even if it only lasts a few months it's going to have a longer life than most wrapping paper.

I liked his kitchen style selection

I like the wrap around couches and the second and third kitchen photos are really nice. The view in the last photo is amazing.

I'm rather enjoying the fact that bookshelves feature so prominently in the interior design ;)
