A kitchen with soul by Arciform

Snow Blackwood calls Linda Schmidt the "cat lady", although she is quick to point out she doesn't mean "loud wallpaper and leaky roof" crazy cat lady. "This cat lady has a restrained color palette and refined taste for antiques mixed with a traditional-modern style." When Snow shared Linda's kitchen by Anne De Wolf of Portland, Orgeon based Arciform I had a visceral reaction. I loved it. This wan't a trophy kitchen, a status proclaiming, bells and whistles, keeping up with the Jones kitchen. No this was a kitchen for cooking, cats and comfort. It's easy to see the the relationship between designer and client, the understanding, the friendship. This is a room with soul ... and style and sophitication. That goes without saying ;)

Blue and white in South Africa

Layer upon layer, blue on white. A home for relaxing, for entertaining family and friends. Expansive ocean views and expansive hospitality. Natural elements are celebrated yet subtle and a fresh look comes with a change out of accent colours. Imagine earthy tones or shades of green. Plett House by Yvonne O'Brien of South African The Private House Company.

My guest bedroom transformed into a media room

The other day I realized I needed a project. Nothing too time-consuming because I have some work coming up on the house I want to tackle but something to tide me over until then. An idea came to mind, and luckily my husband was totally on board. Our guest bedroom never gets used, except for a place for cats to nap. It seemed like a complete waste of a room. We have 2 TVs in the house - one in the living room and one in our bedroom. Watching a movie in the bedroom meant one of us falling asleep within 5 minutes, and watching in the living room meant we'd each take a couch. Neither one an ideal situation. So we turned the rather small guest bedroom (10'x8.5') into a media room. Every piece I used in the space was either already there, taken from other rooms or was pulled out of our 3rd floor storage room. And we LOVE IT!!! Here is what the bedroom looked before the transformation:

And here is what it looks like now. (Resource list at the end).

Warehouse living in inner-city Sydney

I've always dreamed of warehouse living but this Surry Hills conversion by Josephine Hurley Architecture takes it to the next level. Those windows are to die for, the brick on fleek and the modern minimalism the perfect counterfoil to this historic industrial building.

Belgian colour

You know it's not true. The Belgians just don't do greige. They do rich yet muted colour too. Blues and rusts and raspberries. Purples and oranges and ... grey and white. I am in love with the very Belgian look of these rooms by Antwerp-based Natalie Haegeman Interiors. Rich and refined, rustic and restrained.
