A small project and some purchases
Mon, 3 Jan 2011 12 Comments I have purchased a few things for my home lately so I thought I'd share them here for those who don't regularly check my Flickr photostream. But first, I wanted to share a quick project with you that I worked on yesterday. Several weeks ago I spotted a batch of embroidered doilies on Etsy (Cheeky Vintage Closet) on sale for $18 which made me think of a doily table runner I had seen on a blog a little while ago. I bought them and realized how colourful they were and not really going to work in my home as-is. So I bought some dark grey fabric dye and dyed them yesterday (my first attempt at ever dying any type of fabric). They turned out perhaps a bit darker than I hoped but they'll do. Now I just need someone to stitch them all together for me (and they reeeeally need ironing). :-)
Ok, now for my latest purchases (which I really have to chill out on until the new house additions are done for the love of gawd!)

GREAT idea! I like how the dye makes the collection of doilies more cohesive.
You got the tolix! Looks good. If you mix the dye in a bucket then dilute say a cup in another bucket of water you can test dye from lighter to darker by adding more and more cups from first buckets of dye. They lot lovely as is though. I like the dark. More steampunk less dainty.

Kim, you are brillant! I have has a bunch of doilies sitting in a cedar chest for about a decade trying to figure out what I was going to do with them that wouldn't look too "old lady." I had thought I would mount them but...well..... But this is perfect. It totally re-casts them as funky. Now I just have to figure out what colour.....
ok girlfriend, someone is a serious shopaholic! imaginative, but enough already!!! it's unique and nana-hand-me-down creative! know when to draw the line and sit back and enjoy what you have... take a break, kim!

GENIUS! I love that idea - My grandma has piles of doilies that are beautiful but stained. Never thought about dyeing them! Thanks for the great idea!
I am obsessed with the fur on the dining room chairs! WOW! Brilliant. I am also in love with the leather chair and the concept of dying the white doilies I have in the shabby chic country bathroom. I love the grey! I look forward to following your posts as I just found you today.
hey-I love the doily table runner idea-I am actually doing this for my wedding tables in my colours. I found that sometimes the dye is a little bit dark, but I found that if I ran the doily under a hot water tap after removing it from the dye bucket and ringing it out, some of the colour will fade a bit. Keep doing this until you get the desired colour--remember to wear latex gloves or the dye will stain your hands!
