Otthon

Posted on Tue, 20 Apr 2010 by KiM

My sister recently sent me the link to a Hungarian magazine called Otthon. I was excited to find a slew of cool photos on their website. Here are some that really caught my eye. (The first one = SO ADORABLE!).

Ever imagine what goes on behind the scenes of a magazine shoot? Imagine seeing it through the stylist’s eyes. Jason Grant is the Style Director for Australia’s most popular interiors magazine Real Living and he kindly emailed us a link to his behind the scenes snaps for the latest cover shoot. I’ve included just a few but you can see so much more over on Jason’s blog.  (While I’m sharing blog love don’t miss Editor Deborah Bibby’s blog for even more insight into a fabulous magazine.) Back to the home. It belongs to Gloria and Stuart Barton and the shots for the magazine are by the über talented Maree Homer. The interior designer is Tim Leveson and I couldn’t resist including more of his portfolio. It’s light, bright and stylishly casual. Grab yourself a copy of the latest Real Living. Absolutely my favourite mag!

Marcus O’Reilly Architects

Located on a highly desirable street two blocks from the beach in the Melbourne suburb of St. Kilda is this zincalume clad extension grafted to an Edwardian home in a dramatic yet
sensitive fashion.  Old is tied to new, modern meets traditional. Bi-fold doors ensure a seamless flow from indoors to outdoors. It’s about bright sunlit spaces shaded by seasonal vines, strategically planted deciduous trees and overhangs. Think high end finishes with durability as the key and all on a tight budget.  Even the clothesline was given the designer twist, with a rock weight/peg holder adding a bit of flair to a typically ordinary domestic object. Another stunning project by Marcus O’Reilly Architects.

Monday’s pets on furniture

Posted on Mon, 19 Apr 2010 by KiM

If you’d like to send us photos to include in next week’s “pets on furniture” post, please ensure your photos follow our basic rules: First, the pet must be on a piece of furniture. And said piece of furniture must be clearly visible in the photo, so it takes center stage rather than your pet. (Think of it more of a photo of a great piece of furniture…and your pet happens to be sitting on it). And second, the photo must be of decent quality. If it’s dark or fuzzy (from a camera phone) then it may not make the cut. Thanks! (Photos, your name and a brief description can be sent to desiretoinspirekim[@]hotmail[.]com and PLEASE don’t send me closeups of your pet!)

Greetings from the Caribbean! Pikey is primarily an outdoor island cat but when the garden needs sprayed and she is forced to spend the day indoors, this is how she celebrates.  Another one of her mid yawn on one of her favorite outdoor chairs.

My Chihuahua Princeton stretching out on our homemade short-legged table. He loves to jump up there and drink my coffee every morning when I step out of the room!

My new little kitten, Roxie, loves to sniff all the smells in my apartment building’s tiny backyard as she perches on this rustic cafe chair–an indulgent impulse purchase I made one Saturday morning last summer as I wandered through the downtown of a nearby town and noticed a “going out of business sale” sign in the window of one of my favorite little home decor shops.”

In honour of you being featured in a Singapore magazine, here’s 4-month old Mini Schnauzer Bacon posing in our design showroom in Singapore. Second picture is of him lazing at home on a newly upholstered cube stool with fabric from Ikea.

Here we have Archibald Jebidiah enjoying the sunshine on his Virginia estate.  He’s thinking “Gosh it’s good to live in Dixie!

Hi, I’m Nebojsa and this is my cat Katja. She simply loves to sleep under this cool lamp which is actually her ‘solarium’. 🙂

I was visiting my brother in San Diego last week, when an odd scrabbling sound awoke me early in the morning. I went to see what it was and found Lil Joe standing on a desktop. ‘Ummm,’ I said to Joe, ‘wait right here, I’m gonna get my camera.’ He did, I did, and this is the shot (I do love the fabric my sister-in-law, Holly used on the desk chair). When my brother came down that morning I told him Lil Joe had been on the table. ‘Nuh uh,’ he grunted. I merely turned on the camera and showed him.

Here’s our old boy, Moby, and his best friend, Enzo.

I have a few submissions of my late, great rabbit Mr. T. (Unfortunately, he was black, so very hard to get good pictures of. This is why I’m giving you several, in case one is clear enough for your standards. But he had no qualms about hopping up on my mid-century teak credenza, which I always found hilarious. He passed away last October.)

These are my two cats, Pixie and Milo (sister and brother) they are just over a year and like to sleep on top of my bookcase in the family room.

Coco is a very hyper-active dog and likes to run around the house most of the time, but when it is time to relax he likes to hide in between all the pillows on my futon.  Sometimes its hard for me to spot him! LOL
– Jeane
This is Mugsie laying on our couch – he will only sit perched on the top of couch and chair cushions, causing our furniture to get some lovely indentations. But it’s worth it to see how comfortable and adorable he is!

Don’t let these scans fool you. If you ever come across a copy of Unique Home Improvements run. Run fast. Do not look. The vast majority of this English publication is horrid. Think wall to wall bathroom carpet, tapestry chairs and shag pile, multiple platform levels lying in wait from unsuspecting punters, acres of knotty pine and brick and wallpaper covering everything from pipes to light switches. These are the few images that didn’t terrify me. You have been warned! Unique Home Improvements, edited by Harry Butler, Golden Hands Books, Marshall Cavendish, London and New York, 1975 run
