Artamus Hall

Posted on Thu, 15 Dec 2011 by KiM

As I mentioned earlier today, I had to share with you all a few photos of Priscilla Glover and Ivan Spaller‘s home. This is really quite astonishing, hence right up their alley. I am (on a rare occasion) rendered speechless. It is a High Tudor house that we have named Artamus Hall. Attached are pics of the facade – before – then lifted 5 ft. Then completely reworked. Now this…

wait for it….

…waaiitt for itttt….

It's… cosmetically challenged, would be the kind put of putting it. From a critical point of view, what kills the look is that the detailings are too intricate and too much . The charm of Tudor homes comes from the fact that Tudor homes were often a little wonky and imperfect due to the nature of the homes and the times they were being built in. Some people show off their wealth here by living in faux Tudor homes, but the fakeness shows because the lines and angles are too straight. Whatever rocks their world though.
Incidentally, I live not far from Little Morton Hall, and yes, it can remind one of Little Morton Hall in that they are black and white. The similarity ends there, frankly. Is this makeover a parody?

I'm not familiar with Ivan's inspiration for this building, but there are similar examples such as in Taunton:

I found this last night. I couldn't decide if I loved it or hated it. After mulling it over, I've decided that I find this absolutely fabulous. It's daring, certainly, and–as we can tell from the comments–it leaves no one indifferent. But these drab homes often stay just that–drab. This place is now oozing with creative energy. I think this would make an incredible bed and breakfast, art gallery, or, yes, home. This is truly a work of art. Props to everyone (and especially the artist) for bringing this project to fruition. One critique: where is the INSIDE photo tour?

A tremendous amount of work & money must have gone into this transformation from a non-descript house into a architecture/design crime. I appreciate historical and vernacular building styles. But such a Disney-fied facade that is glued onto a building without regard to it's setting deeply repulses me.
