The Sanctuary

Cathy sent us an email the other day about a church conversion in her city of Seattle she thought we’d enjoy. She mentioned it has finally come on the market after a long and winding road including the first developer running out of money to finish the job. This former ‘First Church of Christ, Scientist’ is now 12 incredible modern condominiums. The website states: “Enjoy voluminous interiors boasting soaring ceilings up to 30 feet high and generously-scaled floor plans of 1,600 to more than 3,000 square feet of living space. Many homes include rooftop terraces… pricing from the low $500,000s to more than $1 million“. Very cool! Below are 2 of these condos (a basic one and a not-so-basic one).

I love the stairs! It would be a perfect match to my dream white home.

Having grown up attending a Christian Science church, for over 20 years — and having watched many of them close over the years due to declining membership, seeing these photos felt familiar, and just reinforced what I've ALWAYS known deep down: that these are architectural treasures, easily translatable into today's needs… and they should never be torn down, but re-used and enjoyed.

Why, there are about 4 of these here in Chicago – with at least two on the market – with architectural details and a sense of scale to the auditoriums that make even THIS Seattle church seem pale by comparison.

Bravo to the developers, it really looks like they celebrated the property and its history, rather than cover it up as though it was an embarrassment.

Stunning.

Amazing! So sober yet calming.

sue says:

Beautifully done. Love the abstract art.

Brilliant conversion! Love that the architectural elements were kept intact inside as well. Yet it is so modern and chic. The dark wood kitchen with marble counter is especially fab.

Honey, don't mock the 7/11. People who live with 8-ft wide crown molding also need chips and dip at 2 a.m.

Helen from Toronto says:

WOW, absolutely stunning!

This is just so weird I had to post. I love this blog so much, and visit it every week. I'm clicking along. I come across this post. I'm looking at the picture, thinking this buidling looks awfully familiar. Then it hits me. I work right across the street, and our office windows actually look out at the Sanctuary. Too funny. I had to email it to a couple of my co-workers. The reno has actually been quite loud, and I'm really glad it is done.

Dion says:

Amazing kitchen! Really love the combination of marbles and colors!
