HOUSE House

Posted on Tue, 18 Nov 2014 by KiM

Always intrigued by how architects join an existing structure with a new addition, this one is a new favourite. Andrew Maynard Architects took neighbouring terrace homes (owned by two generations of the same family) and extended both at the rear, stacking the structure 3 levels high. Not trying to blend the old with the new, these brilliant architects separated them with a clear gap using glass infills. The new form is clad entirely with cedar, which is beautiful juxtaposed with the brick of the original homes. And the outline of the house in black is so damn cute.

I’m crawling through the computer monitor and snuggling into both these rooms. Light and dark and dark and light. Photography by Kristofer Johnsson.

Monday’s pets on furniture

Posted on Mon, 17 Nov 2014 by KiM

If you would like to send me photos to include in next week’s pets on furniture post, please ensure your photos follow these basic rules: First, the pet must be on a piece of furniture. And said piece of furniture must be clearly visible in the photo, so it takes center stage rather than your pet. Think of it more of a photo of a great piece of furniture that you want to show off…and your pet happens to be sitting on it. And second, if the photo is too dark or unfocused it may not make the cut. Photos, your name, location and a brief description can be sent to kim[at]desiretoinspire[dot]net. Thanks!

we lost our 19 year old kitty cat, Mulvey, yesterday. so very, very sad. she’s been a star of ‘pets on furniture’ a few times now (in this post and in here). we moved to the Sunshine Coast 2 months ago (so she got to retire to the beach!), but this is a photo of her on the pool lounge last winter – a year before we moved house.

Kim’s note: I’m tearing up a bit – Mulvey looks a bit like my Edgar who passed last year. So sorry again Patti and John 🙁

I adopted Holly from my local pound, and then had a case of ‘buyer’s remorse’ for a couple of weeks afterwards.  However, we’ve persevered with each other, and are now very compatible and content together. Here Holly takes control of my antique walnut couch (recently recovered), with picture cushions from a charity (School’s a Gift) and fluffy yellow ones from Country Road.  Edge of rug can be seen, and it’s from Loom.  All sourced in my city, Melbourne.

My bengal cat Chandler was actually featured a couple years ago at my old house!  We are renovating an new (old) house and this is a chair that I hand painted with chevron stripes on fabric in my newly tiled kitchen!

This is Inigo on an occasional chair I recently reupholstered. It’s his favorite spot!

This is our cat named Arthur!! this time he is sleeping over our blue Queen Anne chair =)

Here’s my cat, Catfish, posing majestically in front of a vintage 1970’s stretched cloth print that my friend found on the side of the road and gave to me.  I love how the small cat matches the big cat almost exactly in the same regal pose.

Here is an entry from me, last weekend when I took photos of the newly painted living room. Felix barely fitting on the new furry stool I found at Homesense.
