Working on a Saturday

Posted on Sat, 18 Jul 2015 by midcenturyjo

I would have absolutely no problems heading into work on a weekend if my office looked like this. Yes please! Stylish, streamlined, bright, classic. BHDM Design‘s own studio. A design firm’s workplace is always a great indicator of their work. But wait! There’s more. The Manhattan-based design studio can do quirky and whimsical as well… for a law firm. Think life size orange sharks floating across ceilings. In a law firm? I’d be heading in to work on a weekend if there were sharks on my ceiling!

Happy Friday!

TGIF! It’s been a hellish week at my day/desk job and I am so grateful the weekend is here! To end off the work week, I thought I would share this really cool idea for a side table – consisting of concrete blocks and a clamp light. It does not get much simpler than that! Industrial vibe, cheap and easy…and comes with built-in shelves! 😉 Via The New Design Project

Bride’s Row

I had to share another Brooklyn row house with you, again by architect Lorraine Bonaventura, because I cannot get enough. 1850’s house was completely restored after being taken down to the brick…Mantels were restored, plaster work recast, herringbone floors meticulously restored and replaced, new limestone and antique french oak floors added to kitchen and dining level. Every surface was completely redone, rebuilt or restored. Radiant heating, air conditioning was added, brick work repointed, new sand cast iron exterior railings, brownstone facade replaced, new weight and chain mahogany windows with antique glass, all wood moldings replaced to replicate original moldings, original window shutters restored. It’s essentially a brand new house! But with character! This home has such lovely details…it’s unfortunate that the decor is bland (IMHO) – I would have added so much more drama with some (better) colour, and a bit of pattern, and some statement light fixtures. Oh, I could dream about what I would do to this home for hours. (Photos via Houzz)

Halcyon days

halcyon – adjective – denoting a period of time in the past that was idyllically happy and peaceful…

You may have seen it in the latest Vogue Living. You may have followed its progress on Anna Spiro’s Instagram account. You may have only seen it in your dreams. Halcyon House, the new boutique hotel at Cabarita Beach in Northern New South Wales. Pattern on pattern with bold colour and crisp white, gallery walls and vintage pieces. A once down at heels beach motel has risen phoenix like to become a glam but welcoming, casually elegant holiday destination. Architecture by Virginia Kerridge and interiors by Anna Spiro of Black & Spiro.
