Rivertown Lodge

Posted on Wed, 13 Apr 2016 by midcenturyjo

Welcome to Wednesday. Welcome to hump day. Welcome to my mid week daydream. We’re packing our bags and heading to Hudson, New York, to the Rivertown Lodge, a boutique hotel housed, in of all things, an old movie theatre. It’s vintage modern meets über cool and it was designed by Brooklyn-based WORKSTEAD. We can sit by the fire in the lobby and chat over coffee or have a drink at the bar but that little nook with the over supply of pillows is mine. A couple for my head, a couple for my feet, one to grab to my belly to balance the book and several to throw at you if you try to steal any.

Ali Budd Interiors

Toronto interior designer Ali Budd is cranking out sassy and classy spaces that must completely win over the homeowners, because I sure am smitten! Soft, neutral colour palettes, timeless furnishings and some bold wallpaper and art to add some spice. Side note: I am dying over the chandelier in the first two photos.

Sometimes I feel I’m trying on other people’s homes like clothes in a shop. Does this look good on me? Is it a good fit? Often what looks good on the rack just doesn’t work when you try it on. Sometimes what looks great in the magazines, the trends, the hottest looks, the must haves for 2016 for your home are just like the cheap and cheerful fashion fads that we all rush to buy and then wonder why we ever did. Like my last post I think I would be very comfortable in this West Village apartment by New York-based Bachman Brown Design. It too is all about making the most of the architectural bones and a collection of furniture and favourite pieces gathered over time. A second “second skin” for today.

Like a stylish second skin

I love all interior styles, from contemporary and traditional to boho and Scandinavian, Hollywood Regency, mid century modern and even minimalist. You name it and I’ll find something to love. I think, though, that my favourite homes are those with interesting architectural bones filled with pieces that reflect the owner’s personality. They don’t have to be new or expensive. They can even be a little beaten up and too well loved. It goes back to the joy of living in a space that over time becomes your second skin. Melbourne House by Greg Natale

The King of Glamour strikes again. Yet another impeccably curated space that is sophisticated to the hilt in this seven bedroom Melbourne home. Sydney based interior designer Greg Natale always nails it and I will forever be a huge fan of his spaces. The design is a study in balance and contrast of textures, hues and shapes. The dramatic entrance, where the angles of the ceiling, windows and doors are juxtaposed by the circular ottoman, chandelier and organic-patterned rug, offers a taste of the dynamics within.
