Stalking a modern take on old

Posted on Mon, 27 Feb 2017 by KiM

Another day another stalking. You’d never guess from its rather unassuming 19th century facade that this inner Sydney terrace house is actually an ultra modern home. There seems to be little of the original house left but sometimes living inner city means keeping true to the streetscape and doing your own thing behind closed doors. The rear elevation is quite striking and the garage with loft over is just too cute. Link here while it lasts.

South Africa is on my travel bucket list, and this beautifully renovated 1950’s 7 bedroom guesthouse in Stellenbosch is accommodations I could definitively see myself really enjoying. Twice Central is owned by Ané Spies, Liesl Swart and Mandi Smit and they did a wonderful job making this a comfortable, casual and contemporary getaway.

Working on a Saturday

Week after week it’s the same cry. If you have to drag yourself into work on the weekend it helps if it’s somewhere stylish. Somewhere like The Working Capitol, a coworking and event space in Singapore by Takenouchi Webb.

Gardens by Nelson Byrd Woltz

The temperature has risen here about 30°C and I am dreaming of all the things I would love to do in my yard once the piles of snow melt away. My husband has made an absolute mess of the front yard by parking his work pick-up plow truck right on the front lawn so I am preparing myself to die of embarrassment when the snow is gone and we are left with a mud pile (not helping at all that we live on a very busy road). As soon as I get this post completed I am stashing a bunch of these photos away for reference. These gardens, walkways, backyards and rooftop patios by landscape architecture firm Nelson Byrd Woltz (located in Charlottesville Virginia and New York City) are soooooo beautiful. The outdoor space above is magical – I love grasses and very “feathery” plants that look like cotton candy.

Parisian chic

Don’t get me wrong. I love Haussmannian apartments. But stunning as they are they need a firm but deft design hand so that the contents are not overpowered by the almost saccharine sweet plaster embellishments, the commanding windows, the drool worthy floors. Sandra Benhamou is a story teller, a lover of light, of beautiful objects and furniture, a woman who embraces eclecticism. Hell, she runs with it but her style is clean, with attention to detail and a dash of humour.
