A 19th century restored home in London

Posted on Tue, 26 Sep 2017 by KiM

Mornington Terrace is a 19th century, 5 bedroom period home in London that has been sympathetically restored by Undercover Architecture. The house hosts many experimental pieces of joinery, fixtures, lighting, sanitaryware, glazing and furniture. These were exclusively designed and built by Undercover Architecture and partnering artisans, sculptors, and makers. A stunning mix of original architectural details with modern furnishings and painted details. I love how shades of blue were used throughout the house for continuity. Currently for sale via The Modern House. (Interior design by Estelle Chandresinghe).

Hotel de Tourrel

Posted on Tue, 26 Sep 2017 by midcenturyjo

Ever wonder why I’m obsessed with virtual getaways to cool hotels? Yes, of course, I like to escape the daily drudgery of work with a little daydream about relaxing by a pool or sipping cocktails with friends but I also love to squirrel away the design inspiration I get from the rooms. Today’s escape is to Hotel de Tourrel, a 17th century palace in the heart of St.-Rémy-de-Provence, now a boutique hotel with seven suites. Add a roof top pool and a gourmet restaurant and I think we have the perfect Tuesday destination.

I have a thing for grey, and so I fell in love with this 119 m² loft apartment in Östermalm, Stockholm as soon as I spotted it. White walls make a beautiful backdrop for grey here with subtle accents in colours via plants, the beautiful rattan pendant and the dining chairs. Lovely! For sale via Lagerlings.

The curse of orange knotty pine walls

Posted on Mon, 25 Sep 2017 by midcenturyjo

Whenever I’ve been asked what to do with ugly orange-stained knotty pine walls or ceilings I have always had one answer… paint them, paint it all! Sometimes you can’t. You could be renting, you might not have the money or the time to invest in such a big job. Then I came across this log cabin styled by Susan Burns and it was an epiphany. The knotty pine walls and ceilings are the perfect foil for the white furniture and soft furnishings. OK the brick fireplace and some of the floors have been painted but the often overpowering orange wood has definitely been softened by what I’m calling the “white within”. A pretty solution don’t you think?
