The Steam Hotel

Posted on Wed, 22 Nov 2017 by KiM

What was once an 18 story steam power plant in Västerås, Sweden is now an absolutely stunning hotel complete with 227 rooms, an 800m2 spa, rooftop restaurant (and another on the main floor), outdoor terrace with pool and gorgeous views of Lake Mälaren. I just got back from a vacation south but holy smokes I am ready to re-pack my bags and head here! Thank you Thomas for the link to these photos of the Steam Hotel via Femina.

There is nothing I appreciate more than an old home with its original details maintained after a renovation, like in this West Village townhouse by Rob Stuart. This fearless family yearned for a color infused, yet calming, fresh design all with the detail and nuance of a rarified turn of the century townhouse. Vintage mantles, layered moldings, patterned wallpapers and colorful fabrics come together in this family friendly home. We nudged various walls slightly throughout the floor plan to provide for a more spacious feel. I am head over heels with this little foyer in the photo above. I love the bold yellow wallpaper for the ceiling paired with the teal light fixture. It’s an unexpected pairing with the rest of the traditional details.

A modern midcentury pool

You could be excused for thinking that you had time travelled poolside to 50s Palm Springs – breezeblock walls, long sleek lounges for sunning, architectural plantings, graphic black and white palette with that oasis of blue water screams Mad Men and Sinatra. Except this is Perth in Western Australia and the time is now. Midcentury mod perfection. Applecross residence by Tim Davies Landscaping.

A gothic industrial front door

In keeping with the theme of gothic industrial from my earlier post, I have had this photo stashed away for a while now and thought this was the perfect time to share it. This is a simple entrance to a home but I love the vibe here. Via Inside Out, photo by Chris Warnes.

A gothic glam industrial loft

Glam + gothic + industrial + loft = this amazing space in Los Angeles by BAM Design Lab (Barbie Palomino & Annie May). This loft is super sexy and grungy with some of the coolest wallpapers I have ever seen. I could totally live here as my city pad and then have a house in the country for all my lighter and brighter decor. Anyone else on the fence about all-over-tufted sofas? I love/hate/love/hate. But here it works so damn well.
