This Victorian Terrace in Sydney’s Darlinghurst blends tranquillity with vibrancy. It’s both a serene sanctuary and a lively hub for music and gatherings. The design aimed for a minimalist stage for life’s theatre, balancing privacy with everyday living. Collaborative planning ensured every item found its place, creating an emptied vessel. The core idea was to design with a respect for empty space. Skylit voids mimic ceramic vessels, casting changing light and mood. Heritage meets contemporary with landscaped courtyards, while brick and timber textures define spaces. Embracing emptiness, the design reveals joy and meaning in simplicity. Located in the province of Frosinone in a very panoramic position at the border of a medieval hamlet is this 14th-century medieval stone monastery. The property has a surface area of about 1,000 sqm, is part restored and is mainly used as a venue for events, but with some further restoration work, the whole structure could be converted into a boutique hotel with 10+ bedrooms (and 8 bathrooms). The building has been part restored and still boasts all the typical features and characteristics normally found in medieval religious properties such as original terracotta floors, wooden beams, coffered ceilings, stone fireplaces. The finishes have been very carefully preserved and, where needed, original material has been used as a replacement. The large halls are covered with beautiful coffered ceilings, while the floors are tiled with terracotta bricks, also original. The monastery boasts a beautiful internal cloister, nowadays decorated with an Italian garden (150 sqm) and surrounded by a beautiful covered loggia with vaulted ceilings.

This former bicycle workshop is now a hybrid between a home and a multidisciplinary creative design space in Madrid de los Austrias, a modern space with an industrial character but with nuances.
And this reminds me of my dream about 20 years ago of living in an industrial loft. Then I realized this city has nothing of the sort and I moved on. Apartments are hard to find in central Madrid, but Mafalda Muñoz and Gonzalo Machado of Casa Muñoz really scored with this space on the second of a 4 story Neoclassical building, though it apparently took them a year and a half to make it legally theirs. They maintained original elements and really leaned into the classical vibe whilst adding modern touches for a really eclectic space. I really love that red paint in the photo below.
