A cycling enthusiast’s retreat

Posted on Thu, 8 Aug 2024 by midcenturyjo

SkB Architects designed this Sonoma Farmhaus for a cycling enthusiast with a demanding global career, who was seeking a retreat for solitude and gatherings. Located in Graton, California, the site offers proximity to the town and cycling access to Sonoma County’s coastal landscape. Inspired by traditional farmhouses, the project features a Main House and a Guest House with a Bike Barn, linked by an outdoor space with a fireplace. Constructed with rammed earth blocks from local soil, it emphasizes simplicity, clear detailing and a connection to the land. The owner describes it as an “icon of sustenance,” offering warmth and richness.

Whispering Dunes, a sanctuary in bustling inner Melbourne, beautifully blends heritage roots with contemporary charm. Homeroom Studio‘s design respects the home’s original character through thoughtful spatial planning and material selection. A natural, earthy palette, anchored by stone with undulating veins, evokes sandy dunes and fosters tranquillity. Rich, jewell-toned furniture contrasts harmoniously with the earthy tones, enhancing the heritage features. The result is an elegant, calming atmosphere with layered, textural furniture exuding warmth and comfort.

Painted white throughout by the previous owner, this apartment had been stripped of all of its original features. The brief was to redesign the entire apartment, including a new kitchen, to create a practical family space that felt comfortable, rich and with character. Guided by the building’s architecture, Max embellished the drawing room with sixteenth-century style panelling, dark painted floorboards and a corner chimney piece. The client was also keen to inject warmth and colour, which was achieved by layering richly coloured paint and wallpaper with sumptuous fabrics and a mix of antique and Max Rollitt Bespoke furniture.
This apartment designed by Max Rollitt has just the right amount of elegance and comfort and country charm. The colours in the kitchen are so delicious I would be quite happy spending hours in there cooking. Photos: Simon Brown.

A fusion of France and Spain

Madrid-based interior designer Tristan Domecq is known for his elegant, European style and I love how he mixes styles and eras together seemingly effortlessly to create a very dynamic and intriguing space. This apartment in Salamanca, Spain has some Spanish influences with some strong French influences at the same time which I love. Why paint yourself into a box when you really don’t need to? Also every doorway should be wrapped in marble, don’t you think? Now that’s taking things to a whole other level of elegance.

Layered into the hills above Tamarama Beach, The Carlisle by Sydney-based Penman Brown possesses a dreamlike quality, blending the romance of the past with a forward-looking vision. Exquisite detailing and custom pieces, framed by iconic designs, create a chic yet serene atmosphere. The textures combine vintage global elements with tribal organics, amplified by futuristic finishes. Sculptural furnishings in a smoky palette of velvety textures are accented by stone and accessories, harmonizing with the natural surroundings.
