Nothing dates a house more than an outmoded bathroom (that and an aging kitchen). I couldn’t resist posting these 80s bathing beauties. Come on! What’s not to love? In 25 words or less “Why I hate these rooms”. Your time starts now. Making the most of Bedrooms & Bathrooms, by Mary Gilliatt, Orbis Publishing, London, 1983 is the source.

… what were they thinking? A study in the bathroom? Forget the idea of a parents’ retreat, even a phone by the toilet or a TV above the bath. Is this taking it a bit far? The only person I know how corresponded from the bathroom met a sticky (or should that be soggy) end. I’ll be back with more retro bathing beauties from Making the most of Bedrooms & Bathrooms, by Mary Gilliatt, Orbis Publishing, London, 1983 later in the week.
I will be posting over the next few days my favourite photos of the year, by room type. The bathrooms from this year (and by this year I mean that I’ve saved on Flickr after Jan 1 ’08) that have inspired me are below.
Reasons I love these: old world beauty, most amazing tiles EVER, fun wallpaper, sleek and simple, copper tub (OMG), mosaic tiles, glamourous, quirky in white, insane view, dramatic, earthy, oversized artwork, dark and moody, bold colour…
My younger sister Jen just bought a house with her boyfriend Dave which includes a bathroom that needs renovating because of some serious leak issues. So I told Jen I would post some photos to inspire her for her upcoming renovation. This was tough because so many bathrooms out there consist of really gorgeous and therefore really expensive tiles or marble, or they’re simply really large spaces. Jen and Dave do not have alot of money to spend and although I haven’t seen the bathroom, I know it will be a small space. Jen and Dave, do not take these photos literally. For example, I do not think you should tile an entire bathroom in black tile, but using all different shapes of a tile in the same colour is a great idea. (I’ve also realized that white tile looks incredible with dark grey grout.) Hope this helps.

Maryam from My Marrakesh has the mammoth task of fitting out 12, yes 12, bathrooms in her guesthouse currently under construction. She’s asked us for some inspiration and we’ve come up with a few ideas. Key words for bathrooms on the cheap – colour, rendered walls, repurposed vintage furniture, tiles where necessary and unusual wallcoverings (sealed of course).

P.S. These were some quick ideas thrown together. Hope you like them Maryam. I’m craving indoor outdoor bathrooms with plunge baths and open air showers. Very spa like and organic. Think Balinese resort but with Moroccan twist. Ahhhh to dream!
