Stalking a 1960s beach house

Posted on Thu, 3 Nov 2016 by midcenturyjo

Dear readers please lend me a squillion dollars so I can buy this Pearl Beach house designed in 1963 by architect Brian Mazlin, with restoration and interior design by TFAD in 2010. It takes me back to a simpler time, when beach houses sat nestled in bush surrounds, a glimpse of sea and the sound of crashing waves all the decoration you really needed. Simple, honest, practical and probably way too expensive for me because of its exclusive enclave position on Sydney’s northern beaches. Other than that it’s just too perfect. For sale via Modern House.

A beach house on stilts. Impeccably designed stairs with storage. A book lover’s dream. This beautiful home is creation of Australian architect Luigi Rosselli. Behind the white picket fence on the front street, a circular stair leads to a relaxed timber veranda , ultramarine weatherboards and the original white timber windows make for a breezy, summery house. Bleached interiors reverberate with crisp and clear classical violin practices and hold a myriad of books encased in every wall stud and recess. At the back of the house, facing into a small tropical garden dense with palms and ferns, there is a garden room with a massive sliding shutter that can be secured, and protects the fully furnished room when no one is at home.  The stair takes position centre stage in the house, supported by a solid stud wall filled with bookshelves and bathed in natural light.

What do you get when you ignore all those seaside clichés? You get a thoroughly modern take on the Australian beach house. Relaxed yet stylish. Casual yet sophisticated. Macmasters Beach House by Arent & Pyke.

Luxurious beach living

Living the coastal life in Sarasota Bay, Florida looks heavenly, especially now that fall has really set in here in Ottawa and mornings are frosty. This home could have gone way wrong (Miami-fied and over-the-top fancy-schmancy) but it is beachy and contemporary and about as casual as you can get in a house this grand, and OMG how gorgeous is that kitchen backsplash?! Great job keeping things cool Studio G Home. (Builder: Steve Murray Homes Photos: Chibi Moku)

Nautical vibes with Matthew Caughy

Shades of blue, grey and white, sisal rugs, plants, bamboo, sailboats…something tells me New York City interior designer Matthew Caughy is inspired by all things beachy and nautical. This combination of elements makes for such soothing, timeless and casual spaces. Add in a vignette of vases filled with glorious white hydrangeas and I am smitten.
