“This award-winning house was designed by architect Hugh Strange in 2010. It is cleverly tucked behind a line of Victorian buildings on Evelyn Street in Deptford; it unfolds over the ground floor of the original period terrace, opening onto a private courtyard garden and the new single-storey house beyond. A contemporary palette of materials including concrete, glass, cross-laminated timber and hurricane-felled Nicaraguan hardwood has been used to dramatic effect throughout.”

A zen haven opens off a common foyer of a Victorian era terrace. Bespoke joinery, windows opening to courtyards allowing light to flood in, wood lined walls and ceilings all define this ground floor flat in London’s Deptford. This simple oasis was for sale through The Modern House but saddly it’s under contract. Doesn’t stop us from popping these ideas away in our inspiration files.

With a strong emphasis on natural materials and the colours of the surrounding environment this Vaucluse house by Sydney-based The Unlisted Collective. No cliched nautical theme, no overworked blue and white colour palette. Just stone and bush. Rugged and refined.

From its elegant orangery style window and high ceilings in the living room to the cosy kitchen, from the verdant garden back through to the sweet and most likely hard-working scullery come laundry this London maisonette in Brondesbury Road has stolen my heart. Now if only I could move to London during the pandemic (my whole country is isolating from the world) I’d make it mine. I had to share one more project from Paris-based RMGB, a colourful and oh so chic apartment in Versailles. Notice though the colour comes from art and furniture. The shell is whitest of white helping those colours pop.

Don’t fight it, enhance it. Josie Simpson of Altus Design Studio loves colour, texture and pattern. In this Blue Mountains house (to the west of Sydney) her approach has been a joyful play of these design elements that don’t detract from the “elephant outside the room” but rather enhances the experience inside.
