Tuft love

Posted on Fri, 16 May 2014 by KiM

About 7 years ago I did a post titled Tuft love, to share my love for all things tufted. It seems tufted furnishings never really go out of style, and I noticed many spaces lately while doing blog research that featured tufted chairs, headboards, sofas, ottomans etc. I have always loved a little tuft here and there – it amps up the glam factor and makes an otherwise boring piece of furniture more visually appealing and cozy looking. So I thought it was about time to bring back some tuft love.

P.S. A huge thanks to the folks at Domino mag (one of our favourites since it’s inception) for including us in their list of the 26 best design blogs – we are among many really awesome blogs so it is really an honour. 🙂

Showcase

Posted on Wed, 7 May 2014 by midcenturyjo

A modern take on tradition. Antonio Martins‘ master bedroom for the 2014 San Francisco Decorator Showcase pays homage to his Portuguese heritage but this is no dusty old museum piece. Hand painted, oversized blue and white tiles jumble across the walls while the show stopper is an 18th century rosewood bed. Showcase rooms are always over the top. They push the limit, shock or overwhelm. They are part art installation, part interior design on steroids but they are also great sources of inspiration. The crisp blue and white, the play of oversize images cut and pasted. Did you notice the old letters in the acrylic boxes? The play of the jungle of green against the blue?

Cabanas no Rio

Posted on Mon, 7 Apr 2014 by midcenturyjo

Perched on the tidal waters of Comporta south of Lisbon, Portugal are two small cabins. Crafted from recycled timber they reference the local fishermen’s huts. The first cabin contains a bedroom and bathroom. The second a living space with basic kitchen. Simple and beautiful, romantic and at one with the wetlands. Cabanas no Rio by architect Manuel Aires Mateus. In my dreams I am there already.

Summer gelati

Posted on Mon, 31 Mar 2014 by midcenturyjo

A room that is a promise of summer to come. With zest and zing and joyful squeals of colour. Like scoops of fruit gelati on a hot day this wonderful bedroom, or should that be boudoir, is just the antidote to long, lingering winters. By interior designer Robert Passal.
