A couple of weeks ago I was stalking a church conversion in Adelaide. Modern behind a traditional bluestone facade. A little too modern for some. Want to join this congregation instead? We love a good church conversion on Desire to Inspire so when I was real estate stalking in Adelaide in South Australia I all but shouted hallelujah when I came across this 1889 bluestone church given just a little contemporary makeover. Love it! Especially the “kitchen sign” and the supersized Tretchikoff. Link here while it lasts.

As promised yesterday a stunning church conversion by Baker Kavanagh Architects. The recently completed redevelopment of terrace residences is in Mill Hill, a landmark heritage church close to Sydney’s centre in Bondi.  The church was converted into two luxury apartments, planned around internal courtyards. Two contemporary terraces were built adjacent to the church with a contrasting aesthetic. Think elegance and restraint, a juxtaposition between the heritage exterior and street scape and minimal white interior. Heavenly!

Kim and I have a thing about church conversions. We’ve committed the deadly sins of lust and envy quite a number of times over the years. (The evidence of our religious obsessions can be found here.) Thanks to reader Paul we can now covet this conversion of the former Tattykeeran Church. It’s even for sale. Maybe your prayers have been answered….. sorry about the bad puns!

Jo and I have a thing for church conversions. The creativity to turn a structure like a church into a home is pretty inspiring to think outside the box. I came across one last night while I should have been doing other more important things (like finally getting my tax paperwork together, late of course). This conversion (found here) is of an 19th century Protestant church in downtown Cape Town, South Africa. It’s painted all white with wood floors left in their original, rough state with modern furnishings to liven the place up. And the enormous suspended frame with blinds is a great way to delineate the kitchen from the living/dining spaces.
