The barefoot house

Posted on Thu, 14 May 2020 by midcenturyjo

Experiential design. For Melbourne based designer and stylist Georgia Ezra of Studio Ezra it’s that feeling you get as you walk barefoot across a tiled floor, a feeling of connecting with the earth. It’s how the decor makes your hear sing, of how you live your life well in a well designed space. In her own family home it’s also about those tactile plastered walls, the bespoke joinery and those oh so beautiful tiles.

Minimalist detail

“A period home’s minimalistic redesign and extension focusing on supreme detailing, exquisite materiality and a richly layered palette. The interior architecture celebrates clean geometries and a boldness of form. A restrained use of colour punctuates a monochrome palette while bespoke joinery and selected fixtures show a dedication to craftsmanship.”

Looking forward looking back

I’m taking a little journey back to historic Como House in South Yarra. No not a physical journey, more like a jump back a couple of years to Como By Design, a show house featuring 23 of Melbourne’s eminent interior designers under the helm of Tigger Hall. The magnificent house is owned by the National trust so the designers were not able to alter the fabric of the rooms and had to return them to the original state once the event was over including the original wall colour! The house was completely transformed – 2 days to set up & 1 day to pack down. I’ve embedded links to each designer in the pictures. Time to go for a little journey yourself.

Bozen’s Cottage

When new owners purchased this 1842 four room Georgian cottage in Tasmania it was almost a ruin. Carefully it was restored, layers of unnecessary additions removed returning it to its subtle simplicity. But oh what stylish simplicity.

“The generations of families who previously occupied this house over two centuries were blacksmiths, carpenters and pastoralists. Their memory is recast in the new work through a series of finely crafted insertions, which provide contemporary amenity and create a delicate scaffold to the rooms.”
