Breathtakingly beautiful

Posted on Wed, 11 Jan 2012 by midcenturyjo

No words. Honestly I am struck dumb with awe. Do such places exist? After the wonderful images in the last post of YLAB‘s latest apartment taken by Jordi Canosa with styling by Daniela Cavestany I went to Sr Canosa’s website to drink in more inspiration. Then I found this. Albergo della Civita.  Matera, Italy. UNESCO world heritage listed. The hotel is spread over a number of Sassi or caves, simply furnished. Lovingly restored. You can read more here. Breathtakingly beautiful… photos and hotel.

Glamping in the snow

Posted on Wed, 7 Dec 2011 by midcenturyjo

… in Les Giettes, Swiss Alps, Switzerland. Except I’ve heard that it has been the driest autumn in Switzerland since…. well I wasn’t listening that closely… and there is no snow. Tell me it isn’t so! A girl from a subtropical land can dream of deep banks of snow though. And a girl who hates camping can dream of glamping with bathrooms and beds and hairdryers and heating and dinners provided. Whitepod. My kind of camping. Via Welcome Beyond.

Friday escape

I thought I would help Kim with her French studies. A weekend away. A full French immersion experience. French food. French wine. Speaking only French. The food and wine are for me. The French is for Kim. I can’t speak a word and anyway it’s rude to speak French with your mouth full of French wine and French food. I think the perfect place to stay would be Baudon de Mauny, a chic and casual mix of modern in a 1777 Hotel Particulier. Perfect.

Faded luxury

Thank goodness that week is over. I seem to find myself musing over holiday getaways on Fridays. I wonder why? I smell rose and musk, orange blossom and exotic spice. Water gurgles and staff whisper just out of earshot. There is  rhythmic music slowly pulsing somewhere in the riad but here in the salon it is cool and dark, peaceful but oh so decadent. From the rooftop terraces the view extends across the city to the Atlas Mountains. Perhaps it’s time to sun like a cat by the pool. Life is just too difficult isn’t it? Bed & Breakfast

Posted on Tue, 12 Jul 2011 by midcenturyjo

Fancy getting away from the hustle and bustle? The idea of a guest house, a bed and breakfast more appealing than an impersonal hotel room? A little bit of paradise in the middle of the Italian countryside? Oh yes please! Toss aside your big city cares and settle into this Upper Tiber Valley barn conversion. It’s part of the owners’ home. Mid century classics and rural Italy. Sounds like a great marriage. Add a private swimming pool and five hectares of land to explore, fig trees to pluck fruit from, a bocce court in the woods. What more could you want for an escape to the country?
