I have a serious love for funky lighting. Of any kind. I think you could call it an obsession. It’s pretty bad considering how many light fixtures I have acquired in the last 4 months or so (there was this one, then these, then this one, then this one, then I made this one, then there was this one, and finally this beauty). But honestly, I could (maybe) give up all those if I could get my hands on a Jieldé. They are the coolest industrial-style lamps and I just love them to bits. Here is a bit of history on Jieldé lamps: They were created by Jean-Louis Domecq whose requirements were to create a simple and robust lamp that articulated in order to adapt to all working stations. They were first produced in France in the early 50’s and in 1953, Jean-Louis created a company dedicated to the marketing of the lamps whose name was formed from his initials : Ji eL Dé (pronounced in French). They continue to be produced today. I have scoured eBay on numerous occasions looking for a vintage version, but they are expensive. Sadly I have never seen them sold here in Ottawa. Alas, one day I will get my hands on one, preferably a 6-arm floor lamp, but I won’t be picky. I’d settle for a table lamp, wall lamp, whatever (but not a reproduction). Anyone else out there in love with Jieldé?

Today’s reader request comes from Sandy: “Now I have the following “problem”: I’m about to move into my first own flat and am searching desperately for an (affordable) ceiling but modern lamp. The furniture is at the moment made from pine in the natural color but I will eventually glaze it white and add some stylish accessories so that it will turn into french style with some modern pieces (side table, chairs, lamps). So the lamps should be modern (60ies), unfortunately I have only found verner panton to be likable and out of production or affordability. Do you have some pics or ideas of studio flats with ceiling lights, which are modern, that you could share?” Sandy’s request is a tad specific, so I searched through my photo stash and found some photos of some pendants that I think look fantastic, and many of which could either be DIY projects or purchased fairly inexpensively, and aren’t necessarily 60s era (why limit yourself?). I really do think if there is a really tight budget that this is a PERFECT opportunity for a DIY. For example, check Ikea as they always have the best lighting – but maybe think outside the box a bit in that case so your choice is not the same as a zillion other people with the same light fixture. Tomorrow I will be posting a reader’s home where she created a pendant light out of several Ikea fixtures wired together. Or perhaps check out your local thrift store for a lampshade, where you can rip off the fabric and just have the “cage” hanging. (I have done that recently to a lampshade I bought for a few bucks at Habitat for Humanity, and plan to hang it on one side of my sofa). I’d also suggest checking out Etsy because I am always on the hunt for funky lighting and they have TONS of handmade light fixtures at great prices. But first, some inspiration for you Sandy, that I think will give you lots of ideas for your dilemma.

I adore the Dear Ingo by Ron Gilad for Moooi light fixture (and my fav new store carries it here!), the thick wooden table, the Thonet bentwood armchairs, the Flos Toio floor lamp… but I could do without that rug.

• Studio Bon by Bonnee Sharp for Schumacher. Inspired by the simple beauty of the familiar… an iron handrail, interlocking threads, a heartbeat and birds balancing in the breeze. Casual cotton canvas to luxurious linen. Love the graphic shapes. Love the colours.

• Still on the metal theme I’m loving these hammered iron pendant lights.  And just in case metal isn’t your thing how about this wooden chandelier? I’ve been checking out online retailer Interior Home Spaces where I found these lights and so much more. Continental US shipping unfortunately for those of us in other parts of the world 🙁

I was scoping out the portfolio of architecture and interior design firm West Chin the other day to see if there were more photos I could showcase here that Jo hadn’t already done in her post back in June. I came across a swanky pad that I thought was worthy of it’s own post. This flat is modern but not too harsh, with funky bits here and there (including a couple sets of boobs and a pair of diaper chairs), and even some cute spaces for the kids (the parents must lock them in their rooms for fear of dirty hands on the furniture). FAB!
