It has been a little while since we visited the portfolio of San Francisco designer Jeff Schlarb, and boy did I ever miss his quirky, playful spaces! This home is a bit less playful and a bit more sophisticated than some of this designs but I adore the colours, patterns (note how in the black and white bedroom the fabric on the walls lines up with the fabric on the headboard!!!) and sculptural elements he’s known for.

A building with an illustrious past, the Hotel Saint Vincent‘s story begins 160 ago when it was opened as the Saint Vincent’s Infant Asylum by the heroic Margaret Houghery. Unveiled in the summer of 2021, in New Orleans’ Lower Garden District, the careful restoration of this 1861 building honors its stately history while layering on a new sense of modernity. The interior spaces are a marriage of original 19th century detailing with mid-20th century Italian design elements. Including 75 guestrooms and suites, guests and members can enjoy drinks by the newly refurbished pool or the dark and moody Chapel Club. Our San Lorenzo restaurant serves coastal Italian fare to locals and guests as well as the Paradise bar where all are welcome. The Elizabeth Street cafe offers breakfast pastries, coffee and Vietnamese fare throughout the day.

I looooove how Iñigo Aragón and Pablo López Navarro of design firm Casa Josephine Studio took what could have easily read as a very cold and small apartment (70 sqm located in the center of Madrid) and created just the opposite. Painted out brick, stone, concrete with exposed beams and a concrete floor in pale grey keep things light and add a coziness, fabrics in rusts and orange shades add warmth, and stainless and tons of mirror provide much reflection and make the space seem larger. The owners, a retired couple, approached Studio Ben Allen to reconsider the piecemeal rear façade of their end of terrace Victorian house in north London and to provide a new kitchen and two new bathrooms – one to be on the ground floor and accessible. The architects were keen to consider how the extension could demonstrate exemplarily use of pigmented patterned concrete as both structure and architectural finish. Green patterned columns and beams create a framework for the salmon colour structural wall panels of the first-floor bathroom. Internally the use of pigmented concrete continues – with stairs, counters, sink, floors, benches, bath and washbasin all cast in pigmented concrete. A second theme is the use of louvered vaulted ceilings with bring diffuse light down into both the kitchen and bathroom. A double height space connects the new ground floor spaces with a new mezzanine on the first floor which in turn is connected to the main stair. This void allows light to penetrate deep into the house while also creating visual and aural connections through the house.
