Stalking convict history

Posted on Mon, 12 Dec 2011 by midcenturyjo

Many of you will know that Australia started its colonial history as a penal settlement. Britain sent us all her worst best and along with our indigenous and immigrant population we have grown to what we are today. Convict settlements where tough to put it politely and the island of Tasmania had the toughest. Today’s stalking takes us to the Georgian era Bull’s Head Pub in Hobart, Tasmania now restored as two modern apartments. Look at the renovation though. Exposed beams, old floor boards, changes of levels and voids, modern conveniences and beautiful old brick. Did you notice the glass splash back over the old brick in the kitchen? There is even a cellar paved with convict bricks. Just where I’d set up my wine cellar with grand old table and racks of fine Australian wine. I’m dreaming remember. I’d add some stunning artworks, a bit more layering of textures, more fabulous rugs, ambient lighting and books, yes lots of books. Oh maybe the cellar could be a library. Thanks To Kelly for sending the link!

Stalking in New Zealand

It’s Spring in New Zealand (lucky b*stards) and Sammy, a Kiwi and regular reader of this here blog kindly sent along some more links to homes there as the market is “exploding with gorgeous summery homes” as she put it. *still hatin’* One of the homes she linked to, located in Auckland, caught my attention. It’s got some odd decor choices here and there but overall I think the owners did a great job. I love the kitchen and the exterior is adorable (we don’t really have cute houses here in Ottawa). Link while it lasts. Thanks Sammy!

Saturday stalking

I think this post could also be titled “Living large in a small space”. A Surry Hills Sydney apartment in a warehouse refit found during my regular real estate stalking. Two bedrooms, one bath under 75 sq m and loads of style. Art and impact. And a great example of how a camera angle can lead you to believe something completely different. Case in point, shot of the dining table looking down the hall. What a great space! Seems huge for such a small apartment. Turn the camera and shoot into the kitchen. Same painting and light. Completely different feel. No room for complaints from me though. I’d love to own this apartment, as is, in the centre of Sydney. Position, position, position and hip too! Link here while it lasts.

Sky high stalking

What a aview! What an apartment! I”m real estate stalking in Camperdown on the Sydney city fringe. It would be tempting to let the view do all the talking but this apartment can more than hold its own against an impressive backdrop. Not brash and bright coming ready for the fight but stylish and comfortable, an easy modern elegance. Almost as comfy as that pillow seems to be for the four legged member of the family. Link here while it lasts. (A big thank you to fellow real estate stalker Andrea for tip off emails!)

Another funky London home

Another lovely home from Domus Nova. This time I’m loving the 2 sofas, the quirky art – except maybe the saddle and the demon with boobs in the dining room- and all furnishings but the dining table. What NOT to do with silver leaf. (Does it drive anyone else nuts that there is no light fixture above the dining table?!)
