Masia en el Empordà

This home is a work of art. The juxtaposition of the ancient farmhouse structure with the modern, minimalist design of the interior is breathtaking. Designed by Barcelona-based design gallery and interior design advisory office Miquel Alzueta Projects.

Respecting history whilst modernizing

Posted on Tue, 20 Jul 2021 by KiM

The house was originally built by E.W. Godwin between 1878-1879 for Frank Miles, a society portraitist and friend of Oscar Wilde. The current homeowners wanted to acknowledge and respect its history – and they also wanted to create a home appropriate for a busy, modern family. This was not an academic historical re-creation. Using the wealth of archive material as a starting point, Rose peeled away the layers and additions, restoring the spaces purity, architectural integrity and authentic spirit whilst delivering a fresh timeless quality and new functionality. I have complete respect for designers who are after maintaining original details. Kudos to the inimitable Rose Uniacke for keeping it real with this home.

The Peter Pan House

It only makes sense to name the home in which JM Barrie wrote Peter Pan The Peter Pan House. This West London townhouse is a Grade II*-listed property in which not one single detail (door handles included) can be changed without permission, and thus its quirks were reserved, and the owners requested the designer, Studio Ashby, utilize lots of colour and pattern. It’s traditional yet full of energy and whimsy. (Photos: Brotherton Lock)

Maple Hill barn

I absolutely adore this barn conversion, another project by Archer & Buchanan Architecture. The complete renovation of a late 19th century barn was part of a comprehensive property plan encompassing 20 acres formerly owned by Main Line architect Walter Durham (1896-1976). The structure was restored with recycled barn materials, insulated and resided, maintaining the feeling of a barn on the interior. The finished work includes the great room, kitchen, study and bath on the main level and screened porch, play area and wine cellar on the lower level. I am completely smitten with this bold, pattern-happy traditional Spanish finca designed by Matthew Williamson. In 2018 Matthew converted this once derelict house built in 1920 into a luxurious, modern family home with 2 bathrooms, 3 bedrooms, dining and lounge areas. Along with extensive garden and summer room renovations, the home has undergone a radical and stylish transformation.
