A contemporary makeover of a Victorian cottage

Posted on Tue, 12 Mar 2019 by KiM

I am in love with this home – particularly the meticulously appointed kitchen (complete with 2 sinks!!). Here are some details: the alteration of and addition to an existing Victorian cottage in Darling Point, Sydney. An exploration of finding the contemporary and grand within what is historic and compact, we have deliberately detailed the space in such a way that the handmade appears both youthful and reverential. As a result, this elegant four bedroom home appears as a delicate, slightly feminine study in the role of the contemporary classic. A beauty by Alexander & Co. (Photos: Tom Ferguson)

A garage converted into a family playroom

Posted on Fri, 8 Mar 2019 by KiM

If this isn’t the coolest hangout/games space/playroom I don’t know what is! When your client hands you a 12-car garage from the 1980’s it is time to get creative. Four bays became a play room complete with four Pullman-style queen bunk beds, a shop became a dining hall and party room, and three bays became an indoor sport court. Working with durable finishes, eclectic furnishings, and outdoor fabrics a bulletproof retreat was created for children of all ages. By Hoedemaker Pfeiffer.

A several-room renovation in a home in Almonte

Posted on Mon, 18 Feb 2019 by KiM

I hate Facebook for the most part, but was reminded recently why I still have an account. Because without it I would not have noticed this incredible renovation project by Emily Arbour. Emily has a gorgeous home in Almonte, a small town outside of Ottawa, and her home was in desperate need of an update. What I saw on Facebook sure captured my attention, and when I went to check out the full story on her blog, I was blown away. The transformation of her kitchen, sunroom, foyer, family room and powder room is fantastic!!! Congrats Emily! I bet you and your family are loving every bit of it. (She has tons of details and sources in her blog post).

Living in the subtropics

Posted on Thu, 20 Dec 2018 by midcenturyjo

The old Queensland worker’s cottages were built to deal with the heat and humidity of a subtropical summer. A hallway from front to back channelled breezes through the house, verandahs provided shade while its position perched on stumps allowed the air to circulate underneath and around. This inner city Brisbane renovation and extension in Gibbon St by Cavill Architects takes the those principles just a little further. In/out living is paramount. Boundaries are blurred as walls and windows move to open up the rooms to cooling breezes and the shade of overhangs and trees provides respite from the sun. It’s never really cold here, perhaps just a chilly winter morning here and there, so this house is all about the balmy subtropical days.
