getting over the virus

WINKS – weekend links. Here we list what has come in during the week, things we’ve found and things we think you’ll want to see. If you’d like to see your blog or website featured email us and if we think it fits with our readers we’ll link you. So what’s in this week?

    • What a bright idea! April Pride Allison wants to introduce us to kaarsKoker (Dutch for candle sleeve). “I am a product designer in Seattle, US who launched a collection of decorative replacement candle sleeves – kaarsKoker – in September 2008. kaarsKoker offers individuals the opportunity to easily and personally a transform a light fixture. The collection of paper sleeves offers a variety of colors and prints to inexpensively ($12-23USD per pair/retail) customize a chandelier or sconce for everyday or holidays.” Great colours, fab patterns.
    • Can’t get enough of mid-century modern and online shops get me all a quiver. So when Elle Greene, owner of Austin Modern emailed I was all over the website with a fine tooth comb. Dangerous though because Elle says they ship all over the world. Help!! I want so much.
    • Julian emailed about a new site. “houzz aims to help homeowners find inspiration in home design and architecture and enables them to find, save and share photos and ideas. Please take a look. We have recently launched, and are trying to spread the word.” Click on over for inspiration and a new community.
    • Sage Moon McKee finds inspiration in landscapes – cracks, shapes, shadows and imperfections. Using photomontage and acrylic paint she creates bold compositions. Find these original works of art in her etsy store
    • Jenny Francis, Toronto architect and interior designer has a new blog chronicling her work, her inspiration, her sketchbooks. Look inside the design process.
    • Coco has a blog. Have you been yet? Cococozy – interior design. products, interviews. Hi Coco!
    • Totally in love with Paul Hamilton’s photos. So graphic, so colourful, so striking. Available from cards to canvases and matted prints. Take a further look here.
    • The decal trend continues and while some are just repeats of what we’ve all seen before sometimes a company comes along that is producing unique and funky pieces. Gecko Stickers guest artist series is fun and original. Check out the catalogue here
  • Kerstin blogs from her 17th century townhouse in France. (Don’t you envy her already?) “Wallflower Dispatches is a mix between interviews, little ideas, book suggestions and a separate column about our life in France here (The Charming Mountain Goat).”

A party in my drawers

Posted on Fri, 16 Jan 2009 by KiM

This blog chronicles my entire kitchen renovation from start to finish. Greentea Design has provided me with their solid wood kitchen cabinets, and I’m taking care of the rest.

If you’d like to be brought up to date, check out my kitchen remodel blog for an archive of previous posts. I posted recently about the hatch door created for access to the basement, and now, how I’ve organized and made use of all the wonderful cabinetry.

Yes folks, there is a party happening in my drawers. My kitchen cabinet drawers that is. All TWENTY FIVE of them (27 but 2 under the sink are just drawer faces). I cannot begin to explain how exciting it was to organize this kitchen, especially those drawers. I have never had a kitchen that had adequate drawer space. This kitchen has so many that despite all the drawer-type kitchen stuff I have, I still have 2 that are essentially unused (I had to find things to put in them because the thought of empty drawers unnerved me). It’s allowed me to be more organized than I have ever been in any of my former kitchens, and I enjoy cooking so much more than I ever have. I’ve even been taking photos of the meals I’ve prepared. This weekend I am having my family over for dinner for the first time since the reno has been completed. I am so stoked to show it off. And I know they’re all dying to see it in person finally.

I thought for one of my last kitchen posts I would show you how much space these incredible Greentea cabinets have and the party that is going on in my drawers. Because let me tell you, having a drawer dedicated to spices is a party in itself!! Sorry if this is a little long-winded, but I felt compelled to document all of it (in the hopes of calming my level of excitement perhaps?)

Let’s start with the pantry. I adore this unit so much. When I sell the house, I have to take the pantry with me. It’s a stunning piece of furniture, I’ve got to say. And I must mention that since all the cabinets have sliding doors (except the uppers), they are SO easy to remove which allows you a clear view of everything inside. Great for cleaning/organizing binges.

Here is the top section of the pantry, which houses essentially ALL of my dishes (alot of which need replacing) and glassware.

This is a door to the left of the top section of the pantry. It is PERFECT for housing baking sheets and anything else flat, especially useful for me because my range (where I would typically put those items) does not have a drawer for storage. It also has a little secret drawer inside, which I figured I’d stash money in for pizza nights (Jo is laughing right now because she knows how much pizza I consume).

Below is the first row of drawers in the pantry. It houses knives, small kitchen gadgets, a drawer dedicated to the cats’ food bowls and cans of wet food, chopsticks, and my growing collection of wooden spoons.

Castle

Posted on Sat, 10 Jan 2009 by midcenturyjo

WINKS returns next week but I couldn’t wait to share one email from my inbox. Rachel Castle is the creative force behind Castle, beautiful bedlinen and embroidered artwork. Rachel and her extensive factory (her very patient mum) handcraft these beautiful pieces for the home. Castle loves crisp white cotton bedlinen, with a little bit of handprinted colour for sheets and pillowcases. It’s crisp white coverlets with printed buttons tossed with yellow and charcoal, polka dots and flowers and a collection of lovingly handstitched one-off pieces on vintage French linen. It’s fresh. It’s fun. It’s modern meets vintage with lashings of indie. It’s so cute!

  • Alexis Scott emailed “with something we might love… that i do too, this new furniture that i have called la-Fête. it’s modern modular outdoor furniture that’s super chic and surprisingly comfortable. it’s also really lightweight which is good because i’m not that strong (i know, i know, i should probably be taking better advantage of my gym membership, but now especially that i have my la-fete wave laying out sounds so much better!) so being able to move this stuff is KEY!…” Go check out the rest of the range here.
  • Loving these vintage charts from blue bell bazaar. When Gosia emailed me earlier this week it gave me an excuse to pop over to her Etsy shop to check out the goodies.
I have just the spot for these!

  • Jeffrey Stone from the Sky Factory emailed with this…. “The Programmable SkyCeiling creates an enhanced illusion of nature by introducing changes of light and color, in real-time. The programmable features allow SkyCeilings to increase and decrease in light intensity and color to simulate the local rising and setting of the sun – even following the seasons.” Now how and where to use this? Could be interesting. Suggestions?

Check out her website Buenos Aires Pastry and dream of living round the corner from her boutique restaurant.
    • Shelley emailed to introduce her website Bohemian Hellhole. Lots of eye candy, ideas and sources. Thanks for sharing Shelley!
    • Claire Eglizeaud and Paul Moreau, a designer and a graphic artist from Bordeaux developed Bonjour mon coussin in 2007. It’s part of a photo contest, ‘Rug-ged America’, celebrating Karastan’s 80th anniversary. Some of the top photography schools from across the nation have been asked to ‘make a statement’, and, as you’ll see, they’ve really risen to the occasion.” Check out the photos and vote for them here.
