A converted hospital

Posted on Fri, 24 Aug 2012 by KiM

A couple weeks ago I was perusing Victoria’s always awesome blog and came across a post about a new online magazine out of Iceland called Home & Delicious by husband and wife team Gunnar Sverrisson (a photographer) and Halla Bára Gestsdóttir (a designer). The photography is stunning, so I had to share some of this magazine with you, as I am a sucker for online mags and gorg photos.

In the first issue they featured a wonderful conversion on an old hospital in Þingeri, that required alot of work – heating, electrical, windows, exterior doors. The homeowners did it right, and had the new windows and doors made to mimic the look of the old ones. Old floorboards were discovered beneath layers of flooring and were re-sanded. The result is a really beautiful, historical home that is simple decorated, but so effective as the decor does not distract from the beauty of the building. Serenity now.

Hello Mr Waller

Me again. I must admit I made a bit of a fool of myself gushing on last time. Just wanted to tell you how much I love this 1880 Victorian terrace renovation. The juxtaposition of old and contemporary, the original staircase and the vertical panels of frameless glass. The clean modern lines, the crisp joinery against old floor boards. It’s here and now and harks back to then. It’s memories past and new memories to be made. That’s all. Just a little note. Thanks and take care.

Stairs for Kim

Posted on Fri, 3 Aug 2012 by midcenturyjo

Kim is hoping to start her new home in the coming year. She has been gathering ideas for months (actually that is probably years) and I have been equally guilty of bookmarking pages and saving files. Today I came across these stairs while real estate stalking. The moment I saw them I thought “Kim’s new home”. And if she doesn’t like them I’m sure there is someone out there who will. You can see the rest of the house here.

New work from Antonio Martins

An eclectic mix of vintage, industrial and modern pieces defines the latest home by San Francisco interior designer Antonio Martins. Starting with an impressive concrete and steel base in a home designed by Zack de Vito Aarchitecture, Martins has layered not only furnishings and finishes but meaning into the modern decor. Favourites besides the Cassina Cab chairs in the dining room? The fab string of lights hanging through the stairwell and the personal touches like the b&w photos of family and friends casually propped on steel shelves. (More of Antonio Martins’ here and here.)

2kul Interior Design

Polish design is centre stage again. The creative scene in this country is hot hot hot at the moment. Case in point this stunning private home by 2kul Interior Design. mixes the right on trend black and white with layers of natural finishes, rough luxe and texture and revs it up a notch with an amazing industrial effect balustrading to the staircase. It’s a clever mix of old and new and the perfect hard edged modern foil to a softened, almost shabby meets scandi vibe.
