New work from Antonio Martins

Posted on Fri, 20 Jul 2012 by midcenturyjo

An eclectic mix of vintage, industrial and modern pieces defines the latest home by San Francisco interior designer Antonio Martins. Starting with an impressive concrete and steel base in a home designed by Zack de Vito Aarchitecture, Martins has layered not only furnishings and finishes but meaning into the modern decor. Favourites besides the Cassina Cab chairs in the dining room? The fab string of lights hanging through the stairwell and the personal touches like the b&w photos of family and friends casually propped on steel shelves. (More of Antonio Martins’ here and here.)

2kul Interior Design

Polish design is centre stage again. The creative scene in this country is hot hot hot at the moment. Case in point this stunning private home by 2kul Interior Design. mixes the right on trend black and white with layers of natural finishes, rough luxe and texture and revs it up a notch with an amazing industrial effect balustrading to the staircase. It’s a clever mix of old and new and the perfect hard edged modern foil to a softened, almost shabby meets scandi vibe.

Pearse

Imagine living in the bustling, densely populated inner city suburbs of a cosmopolitan city. Imagine living in a home that sits on a very small piece of land. Overlooked by neighbours. Imagine living in a private oasis with walls that slide away and blur the boundaries between inside and out. Where you can literally reach out and touch the foliage, dip your toes in the pond. Imagine a secret garden in Birchgrove in Sydney. Love this home by Pearse. There is even more to love after the jump including a couple of sexy staircases and books, oh books!.

Reader request – stairs

Posted on Thu, 4 Nov 2010 by KiM

Today’s reader request comes from Anna of from bali with love: “I have a question maybe you and your readers can help me with. I plan to renovate a one story house to a two story house. The front door/main floor opens into the living area (rectangular shape). I’m thinking the living space is the best place to add the staircase to go to the second level but I’m having a hard time deciding what type of stairs to use and a good location for them? By the front window/door? Along the long wall on right side of room? etc?  Ideas, pictures, advice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!” My initial thought is to place the stairs by the front window/door. That way all that stuff that will take up space will be in one location and the rest of the space will be free. I went digging through my photo stash and found all sorts of ideas that may help – although I didn’t find too many photos that clearly showed stairs situated in a living room. But I think these will help….and thank gawd stairs aren’t quite as boring as they used to be!
