For Sale: Varden Street, London E1

Posted on Wed, 17 Jun 2020 by midcenturyjo

“Settled amongst one of London’s hidden Georgian terraces along Varden Street is this exemplary three-bedroom townhouse, meticulously renovated by historical paint expert, Pedro da Costa Felgueiras of Lacquer Studios. The award-winning design represents an artful fusion of early 19th-Century detail and thoughtful modern concessions that combine to create a wonderfully individual central London home.

It is eminently clear that the original fabric of the building is fundamental to the owner’s renovation. Original fittings such as panelling and staircases were repaired during the process, and the rear gardens reinstated on what had become a car park. Bespoke paints that were hand-mixed using linseed oil and antique powder pigments enabled da Costa Felgueiras to create historically relevant tones to rejuvenate the interiors.”

There is something about the old Georgian townhouses in London’s East End especially those that have been sympathetically restored/renovated so that although life’s mod cons are well catered for it is almost as if time has stood still. Varden Street, London E1 via The Modern House.

Southern sensibilities in a Nashville home

Posted on Wed, 10 Jun 2020 by KiM

Pattern and colours (some subtle, some not at all) with a traditional twist have me wanting to high five Bill Brockschmidt and Courtney Coleman of design firm Brockschmidt and Coleman for creating such a beautiful home. The decoration of a gracious early 20th century brick house in Nashville’s Belle Meade neighborhood renovated by Ridley Wills and The Wills Company.  The goal was to create a warm, inviting home that is as stylish and elegant as it is hospitable and comfortable for the entire family.  While a mix of English, American and French antiques – many sourced from New Orleans – is integrated in a traditionally southern manner, an assertive color palette and the tailored appointments reflect a more urban sensibility.  The dining room walls were inspired by the chrome yellow color in the redecorated Monticello dining room. The scenic powder room wallpaper was salvaged from the stair hall.

It would be so easy to obliterate the past and slot a sleek contemporary kitchen and bathroom into this Art Deco apartment. It takes far more skill to bring all the necessities of modern living and still complement the original featues. Coogee apartment by Sydney-based interior design studio Decoroom.

An 1800’s farmhouse on Long Island

Posted on Fri, 15 May 2020 by KiM

Leaning towards traditional, this Long Island farmhouse is the perfect weekend refuge. Warm and earth tones set the stage and give off such a calm, peaceful aura. For the first phase of the renovation of an early 1800’s farmhouse on Long Island, we were brought in to bring back the architectural integrity and soul of our client’s home. While the house still had some important elements intact, much of the renovation was focused on adjusting the flow of the rooms and adding architectural bones where they had been removed. A weekend and summer house for a young family, our client desired a colorful palette that felt appropriate during all four seasons of the year. To that end, we filled the rooms with luxurious upholstered furniture that beckons you to sit down and stay while, meanwhile a curated collection of not-so-precious antiques and vintage pieces remind you to kick up your feet and enjoy your cocktail.
