Kitchen love

Posted on Wed, 2 Sep 2015 by midcenturyjo

Kitchens are on my mind at the moment. My own is way overdue for a complete renovation. I’m drawn to these raw but beautifully crafted, rough but luxe kitchens by German-born, Italian-based designer Katrin Arens. Honesty, simplicity. Less is more. Reclaimed and re-used materials, rich with history and patina. Sigh.

Concrete and wood

Concrete, wood, brick, floor to ceiling windows….sounds like the making of a sweet apartment I would say. This space by Brazilian architecture firm Play Arquitetura (the folks that brought you the cat apartment) just needs a few rugs to warm up the space and a few more accessories and it is pretty much on point.

A family oasis

This bright and airy extension to a California bungalow by Melbourne-based BG Architecture is all about flexible open plan living and a seamless transition between inside and out. Favourite bits? The generous daybed by the expansive window (which you just know will hide great storage) and the simple, modern lines of the kitchen warmed by wood and the terracotta lights. These stylish family quarters are the perfect relaxed oasis from the bustle of the outside world.

Main Street House

This simple and modern structure is my ideal new-build home (minus all the corrugated steel on the exterior – I am not a fan of that stuff). Concrete floors so cats can run amok as they do and I won’t have to scream, pale wood and white walls as a lovely backdrop for furnishings and art while not losing focus of the architecture, some exposed beamed ceilings, an abundance of large windows, and a streamlined outdoor space. Another successful project in Seattle by SHED Architecture & Design. (Check out past features here and here)

Lakeside lair

Moody and brooding. Modern masculine with a touch of retro. Wood on the walls and mah jong sofa on the floor. A stylish lair for entertaining and relaxing. And then there is the water. Lakes 1 via Airspace locations.
