Finding the balance

Posted on Wed, 24 Jun 2020 by KiM

Gemma, founder of Balance Interior Design in South West London, believes that excellent interior design is about finding that sweet spot between what could oppose – aesthetics & function, period & modern, symmetry & offset. My design style leans towards calm interiors with a sense of space and organisation. I focus on light, layering and materiality for a pared back and relaxed style which is at once authentic, warm and inviting. Timeless, comfortable and serene.

Southern sensibilities in a Nashville home

Pattern and colours (some subtle, some not at all) with a traditional twist have me wanting to high five Bill Brockschmidt and Courtney Coleman of design firm Brockschmidt and Coleman for creating such a beautiful home. The decoration of a gracious early 20th century brick house in Nashville’s Belle Meade neighborhood renovated by Ridley Wills and The Wills Company.  The goal was to create a warm, inviting home that is as stylish and elegant as it is hospitable and comfortable for the entire family.  While a mix of English, American and French antiques – many sourced from New Orleans – is integrated in a traditionally southern manner, an assertive color palette and the tailored appointments reflect a more urban sensibility.  The dining room walls were inspired by the chrome yellow color in the redecorated Monticello dining room. The scenic powder room wallpaper was salvaged from the stair hall.

There is so much drama when using dark colours in a space. Add in some touches of bold shades of mustard and blue and it’s a feast for the eyes. It has been a while since we featured the work or Parisian interior designer Marianne Evennou and I’m delighted to share more of her unique take on interiors.

Flamboyant modernism in a Madrid home

Flamboyant, sassy, modern, vintage, colourful, dramatic…I love everything about this Madrid home designed by Carlos López of L.A. Studio. There is so much energy and just a general aura of coolness here.

Earthy modern

This is an apartment I can get behind, and move into immediately. Clean lines, earth tones with hits of mustard yellow (I loooooove yellow), deep ochre(?) and salmon. Lots of comfy places to sit surrounded by pale woods and chalky walls. Appealing to the masses. By interior design duo Espejo & Goyanes. (Jo featured them back in February).
