House Amanda

For those who are into black and white with pops of colour, this house in Hout Bay, Cape Town, South Africa is for you. House Amanda by Inhouse. The brief was to design a house that would celebrate local contemporary art and allow the owners to entertain guests frequently. The house had to accommodate a mature family and be equally livable by day and night. It was important for the house to embrace the area in which it was located, so a sensitive architectural design was one of the criteria. The house needed to embrace the exterior with its beautiful views of the Hout Bay valley and surrounding mountains.

Black and white and grey

Mr. Waller, Andrew Waller, Mr. Interior Design Master...whatever you want to call him, this pied-à-terre is a little slice of heaven in white, black and grey. Love all the muted tones here. It is so calming and dare I say, the perfect bachelor pad. (Photos: Maree Homer)

Black and white

You can never go wrong with black and white, and in this case it makes for a stunning exterior of a home that was known as being the neighbourhood "ugly duckling". Located in Johannesburg, South Africa, the owners of this home bought the house despite the real estate agent admitting she thought no one would buy it. After 4 years, the home became a simple, beautiful modern retreat with a mix of contrasting textures. And the cats seem to love it. I am totally smitten with the last photo. Via Visi. Photos: Dook

A black and white apartment in Lyon

Those doyens of dark, wizards of white, masters of all things French chic, Pierre Emmanuel Martin and Stéphane Garotin of Maison Hand have held us in thrall for many years. Kim and I love anything they create. The only niggle is whether we like their black décor more than their white décor. Perhaps we could settle on a little bit of both.

A simple beach house in Costa Rica

I have another project from a Polish interior designer to share with you. Magda of 2kul Interior Design sent photos of a beautiful beach house in Costa Rica. Is a simple project, but maybe, with everything that is happening last days simple is not a bad thing. Project is in the middle of nowhere ;), around Avellana beach in Costa Rica. Not a big budget, not much stores around and qualified workers. So we use anything that we found and nature gave us. Bark of a palm tree gives us material to make chandelier above the stairs, beach sticks and wood from the ocean - all the other decorations, lamps structures, handmade 'deer' on a wall. Palets that been left after construction become furnitures. Had my mother and her skills around so ask to make this huge hanging black and white lamp that you can see in the corner of a room. This goes to show with a bit of ingenuity and some found objects, you can create a wonderful space with next to no budget. For the record Magda, your mom has talent - I would buy that light fixture!
