Stalking modern living in a historic home

I'm stalking one of my most favourite Australian homes. Colourful contemporary living within a beautiful Victorian era house in the Melbourne suburb of South Yarra. You may recognise this design crush of mine. It's by Technē and I featured it back here. While you drink in the pictures and the video I'll be sitting here trying to figure out how to rob a bank or build a Ponzi scheme to raise cash for the auction. Link here while it lasts.

A 300 year old restored coachman's cottage in Germany

There are several styles of interiors that I am drawn to, and this 300 year old restored coachman's cottage in Germany owned by designer Jeanette Walther embodies my favourite. Rustic, timeworn, weathered, textured, rough. Shades of brown and black and grey and earth, barnboard, elements from nature, chalky walls, peeling paint. Picture perfect. Photos by Ivar Janssen for MilK Decoration and Architectural Digest Gemany.

Playing favourites

We try not to play favourites here on Desire to Inspire but sometimes we just have to fess up. There will always be a special spot in our design hearts for those who are ahead of the pack, who repeatedly create homes where every room goes straight into our inspiration files, where we would move in in a heart beat. Jessica Helgerson and her team are such designers. Just look at this 1920's Portland home with its soft and muted colour palette and a modern, fresh fitout that respects the history of the house. Actually I'd be happy to just live in the kitchen a la Cinderella. Neely House by Jessica Helgerson Interior Design.

A 1980's bungalow gets a boho makeover in Bangalow

A joyous celebration of all things boho in the hills behind the beautiful blue beaches of northern New South Wales. In a part of the country known for its lush greenery and laid back alternative lifestyle, it's not surprising to find such a colourful, individual home. Stylish, fun, liveable and lively ... and it once was a boring 1980's brick bungalow. A home about personality and passion by Byron Bay based Alida and Miller.

A reconstructed 16th century home in the Czech Republic

My previous home was built in the early 1900s and I thought that was old, although sadly it lacked any interesting architectural details (we did find a clump of horse air in the walls - does that count for something?). I would like to introduce you to Štajnhaus. This VERY OLD 16th century former home now a hotel located in the town of Mikulov in the Czech Republic was reconstructed (it had partially burnt in a fire in 1926) and maintains much of its original details, which makes it incredibly special. Love the juxtaposition of some of the modern details that have been added. (Thank you Barbora for the link!)
