Modern Tudor style in New York

Posted on Tue, 28 Mar 2023 by KiM

Based in the quaint town of Larchmont, NY, a suburb of Manhattan, this home was built from the ground up in collaboration with DeGraw and Dehaan Architects and Aurora Builders. After much brainstorming and early conceptual meetings, the design team decided a modern interpretation of a Tudor style home felt appropriate for our clients and the surrounding area. Honing in on the use of organic materials blended with a colorful palette, this home is truly a special project that was the result of a concerted collaborative effort between architect, client, builder, and designer.
I am a fan of this mix of light and dark spaces and mostly neutral tones throughout. Cozy, simple and timeless. Designed by Ursino Interiors. Photos: Tim Lenz.

A refurbished flat in Chelsea

Posted on Tue, 28 Mar 2023 by KiM

This project was a total refurbishment of a rather neglected mansion flat on Chelsea Embankment for the new owners,  a retired North American couple who wanted a comfortable base in London from which to explore Europe. We sought to make the flat feel as though nothing much had been done except a gentle refurb and some new furniture when in fact the apartment and all its its services and layout was completely overhauled to make a backdrop for the clients collection of ceramics and photography.
I love the old world vibe of this space. It’s elegantly casual and chic without being pretentious. Designed by Adam Bray. Photos: Oskar Proctor

A castello for sale in Northern Italy

Posted on Sun, 26 Mar 2023 by KiM

This castle is like a museum of history, and I find it so captivating. It is located in Piedmont, an area in Northern Italy. There was a 13th century manor but all that is left of that is a tower. The housing part was rebuilt in neo-medieval style in the nineteenth century and today looks like an elegant, stately home, with large frescoed rooms and a beautiful park located on a spur of rock overlooking the river. In the historic part there are 9 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, 8 lounges with an average height of 5 meters, completely frescoed. In the renovated part there are 12 hotel rooms and a 140-seat restaurant. In total there are 21 bedrooms, 17 bathrooms totaling 53,820 sqft. A wee bit pricey at €6,500,000 but worth it for the right owner to come in here and make this spectacular. Listed with James Edition.

It took 3 long years to convert this former watermill in Alsace, France built in 1565 into the beautiful hotel villa it is today. The mill is registered as historic and therefore took extra care, but the resulting guest house with 5 unique rooms and spa that contains a hammam and a whirlpool are absolutely stunning and I love how unique each space is. Bits of history showing through in the architecture along with the amenities and comfort of more modern furnishings – the amalgamation makes for a perfect getaway. A decorative design studio established in 2014 by Founder and Creative Director, Lucy Cunningham, who lives in the Hampshire countryside with her husband and two sons. Layers of the unexpected set Lucy’s refined English aesthetic apart. The contemporary and the classic are blended seamlessly and skillfully, with longevity rather than passing trends in mind. Greatly skilled with print, which she applies with a peaceful elegance, Lucy draws influence from art, travel, nature and a variety of cultures and eras to inform her vision. Impeccably sourced Ikats, Kantha and Suzanis may be teamed with historically inspired designs, there are no rules. It’s this boundless curiosity and sensitivity that allows her to create beautifully considered homes rich with character and warmth.
This is what I am after – comfort and a vast range of influences that make it a bit unexpected and challenging.
