The renovation of this Art Deco penthouse apartment at Bondi Beach, Sydney opens the interior to an external courtyard and delineates internal space by a series of joinery walls. The new sits lightly within the historic shell with period features remaining intact while modern considerations are addressed and sinuous curves touch lightly on Art Deco angles. A cool, hip pad within a classic old apartment. By Marsh Cashman Koolloos.

This place is so nice, I really like the tiles in the kitchen.

Now here is a place where you can achieve minimalism easily. It's so beautiful it works as art all by itself and doesn't need embellishment. I could live there – except – I hate those floors. I wish the floors were more slick and that the animal skin rug were edited out. But still a gorgeous place.

I always expect exposed brick when floors like that show up; its disconcerting to have them up against slick white curves. I can't see how decisions were made, but I don't care. It's like Italian: I don't get the language, but it is beautiful to me as a whole. Sensible, a casual lifestyle layered on top of sophistication, a good use of space. I especially like the openness of the master bedroom, where the usual approach is to wall the owners of the house away from everything. So I would tint the ceilings a very pale blue… and yes, cowhide has had its day. Those are just quibbles.
