Stalking modern in a terrace house

Posted on Tue, 14 Oct 2014 by midcenturyjo

OK. I know. It’s another old terrace house with a modern extension and an open plan kitchen living area. It’s modern architecture not only added on but it has seemingly insinuated itself through the house’s  old bones. I know the purists will hate it, those who cherish historical restoration and those who herald modernism. I know. I know. It’s an architectural chimera and I love it.  I’m stalking the cheek to jowl terrace houses of Darlinghurst, Sydney and I couldn’t be happier. Link here while it lasts.

This place falls into the "so intentionally ugly that it's actually cool". It screams, "We are so rich that we can afford ultra high end fittings and flawless craftsmanship and yet undermine it with hideous combinations of colours and materials, just for the sake of being subversive." Which is probably an acceptable thing to scream in Darlinghurst.

Seriously, I'm okay with the smirking return of avocado kitchens, but with grey stone benchtops? And what the hell is with that nasty green and brown onyx in the bathroom teamed with grey tiles and greige cabinetry? It's just awful.

Which is a shame, because with a little tweaking this could be a genuinely beautiful house.

Natashia says:

As beautiful as this house is (minus the kitchen and bathroom colours, layout great, colours meh), what the hell is that artwork in the living room?? I kept scrolling down, then back up, then down, then up again.. it's just.. umm.. I don't know.. what is that??!!! It looks like food grease found on an old stove top, but kinda bodily fluid slash decomposing. I don't think I could ever have that in my house hahaha. Otherwise, the place is amazing!

Steve says:

They are dreaming if they think they'll get the asking price. The place is actually pretty small and hasn't even been opened up at the back. There's no backyard at all once you get a car in there. I agree with comments about the dubious choice of kitchen and bathroom decor.

Jared Hayden says:

I for one find it gorgeous–including the color scheme and choice of marble in the loo. However, I also take exception with the large-scale diarrhea-themed artwork. What were they thinking?!

KP says:

Love it. All of it.

OA says:

it's in the latest belle issue – but the pics there are so different

Ombia says:

Ha,ha Natashia great description of the wall art. I would move in and first thing scrub that away. Windows are beautiful. I love that small dining nook, bathroom, bedroom, stairway fence, cat proof backyard. I like the colour of kitchen and bathroom furniture and would only change the countertops. Miele, Liebherr and Smeg appliances are also bonus.

Charlotte says:

LOL at the artwork description. What about the giant orange horse head over the bed?

Jenny says:

Love the gray herringbone floor in the dining area. That nasty artwork is right next to the kitchen, so maybe it's part of a diet that involves being too grossed out to eat? Either that or they just fling their old food onto it when they're done eating.

María says:

Olive green and white marble! Perfect match
Lots of love, xx
