The Yard House

Posted on Tue, 21 Aug 2018 by KiM

Wow do I ever love this house! It has just enough unusual features to fascinate me and has me imagining how I would decorate it. Also, check out the bathroom!!! How fun to use vintage fixtures in typical retro colours against a black wall. LOVE THAT!! Currently for sale via The Modern House. Here are some details: This remarkably conceived four-bedroom house, designed by award-winning designer Jonathan Tuckey, is arranged around a central courtyard on a secluded plot just behind Lordship Lane in East Dulwich. The materials utilised throughout draw from the robust character of the adjacent brick buildings and the raw qualities of the ‘yard’ site. While concrete blocks are prominently combined with a timber-and-steel superstructure frame, the house’s defining element is certainly the courtyard facade, lined in translucent polycarbonate Rodeca panels. The courtyard forms the primary space around which the life of the house revolves. Tuckey envisioned this area as a kind of outdoor room to which all the main interior spaces are connected. North-facing workshops are placed nearest to the street entrance, with the bedroom wing opposite. The two wings are connected by a double-height living and dining central section. The courtyard is expressed as a formal, ordered space which gives the house a dignified character and enables the creation of a proper ‘front’ to the building by placing the main entrance centrally within this space. The stairs to the first floor arrive above this entrance, with the porch roof acting as a balcony, giving views through the courtyard to the gardens below.

Working on a Sunday

Having to be at work on a Sunday in summer is a horrible thing. But if this was where you worked, it would be a bit less painful wouldn’t it? This 3000 sg ft space in Minneapolis, MN is the rad home of design firm Studio BVStudio BV is a new design studio founded on the idea of reinvention with a mission of creating transformational design solutions and setting out to reshape the practice of design. The first office for this new firm is reflective of that mission. Flexible, open, transparent and hard working the studio space is open and embraces the warm materials of wood, steel and brick of the historic warehouse. The studio features, sliding doors that you can pin up work on, writable glass walls, sit to stand and lounge huddle rooms, collaborative and formal conference rooms and places to connect near the studio workspace. The custom brand wall comprised of rotating colored blocks, allow the design team to create new expressions of patterns to express the mood of the firm. Art plays a signature role in the office. The art collection is comprised of mostly local painters, weavers and photographers and is on display throughout the space.

A holiday home on Cap Ferret

A holiday home in Cap Ferret, France with serious cabin-like undertones. Wood, and some more wood reign supreme with a masculine feel here. A very neutral colour scheme and lots of leather and copper seal the deal. (P.S. I am in love with the vintage gym mat platform lounge creation in the photo above). Design: Festen Architecture. Chesterfield sofa shopping with Timothy Oulton

Posted on Fri, 17 Aug 2018 by KiM

Ask me what my favourite style of sofa is and the first thing that always pops into my head is CHESTERFIELD! I know I’ll never find a vintage one around these parts so buying new is the only way I have a chance of getting my hands on one, and now I have a great source for this classic sofa style. British furniture and interiors company Timothy Oulton is known for its creative collections including distinctive handcrafted leather furniture, unique lighting and home accessories. Exuding the perfect balance of tradition and modernity, each piece is pervaded by a passion for traditional handcraftsmanship and a fearless quest for innovation. They take what is typically thought of as traditional and make it relevant for today. “Be relevant or be dead” – Tim Oulton 🙂

Let me give you a little taste of what the Timothy Outlon brand has to offer in the realm of chesterfield sofas:

These give me heart palpitations. That tufting! The worn, vintage look of the leather. That curved arm. So hot!!!

DAMN it is so sexy in black! I should note they have an incredibly broad range of leathers and fabrics (for those who don’t do leather). I counted 7 black leathers! You’re bound to find your dream shade.

Not only do they have a huge range of materials, but sizes too. You can choose from a 1 seater, 2 seater, 2.5 seater, 3 seater, 4 seater and a footstool. That’s not all. The red leather chesterfield above is the Westminster Feather Sofa that has an added touch of luxury in the form of plump down feather filled cushions. WHOA. If you want something with a bit of femininity, there is the Serpentine Sofa that has a sweet curve at the front. Or if you want something less traditional and more modern, there is the Piccadily Sofa that has narrower arms and the absence of any studs or piping. Looking for something with a glamourous edge?  The Westminster Button Faded & Degraded Sofa comes in 4 vintage rug-like velvets – a modern take on faded grandeur. The variety of options are impressive.

Here are a few more photos of Timothy Oulton’s chesterfields in spaces he has designed and some that demonstrate his love of tufting.

A bit of texture, a bit of colour, a bit of fur, a bit of wood, and lots of white. A smattering of designs from the portfolio of San Francisco designer Nicole Newkirk.
