Relaxed sophistication in L.A.

Posted on Wed, 31 Oct 2018 by midcenturyjo

It’s all about understated elegance, about the timeless nature of a room, about texture, clean lines, a calming colour palette. It’s about a relaxed sophistication, about the owner’s personality, about simple luxury. Canyon House by L.A. based interior designer John De Bastiani.

Stalking a dream garden room

Posted on Tue, 23 Oct 2018 by midcenturyjo

Sometimes it takes just one room, a single perfect space that captures your heart and soul completely. This lovely heritage home in Sydney’s prestigious Darling Point is beautiful. The windows are stunning, the kitchen is amazing but it is the garden room, or at least what I call the garden room, that will haunt my design dreams for months to come. Lead-light and parlour palms, rattan seats and french oak tables. Perfection. This is one of the times I wish I was actually touring the house not just real estate stalking. Link for the listing here while it lasts.

A historic, modern farmhouse

Posted on Fri, 19 Oct 2018 by midcenturyjo

A 19th century sandstone farmhouse a few hours outside Sydney undergoes a renovation but it’s not a cheesy, chintzy Victorian time capsule that emerges from the builder’s dust. No. It’s a modern farmhouse, honest, sympathetic, a calm respite from the city rat race. Sophisticated in its simplicity yet true to its roots. Capertee Valley Cottage by Studio Esteta.

Citrus Scandi

Take an apartment with amazing bones such as soaring windows, ornate plaster cornices, herringbone floors and Swedish tile stoves. Fill it with the best of contemporary furniture (blonde wood obligatory of course). A monochromatic paint palette would be all  that was needed to achieve the much coveted Scandi style home. But add a slice or two of citrus oomph and it takes it to a whole other level. Talk about zing!!! Queens Park House

What Alexander and Co said about this Sydney project:
“Queens Park House is the transformation of an existing 1900’s semi-detached cottage in Sydney. The project created a new 4-bedroom home whilst the material palette and architecture explored the use of steel detailing and various natural hues and textures. The internal styling, lighting and furniture responded to our client’s very particular ambitions.”

What I have to say about said property:
“Swoon!”
