Normally when I dream of an island getaway it involves palm trees, white sands and a Bali style pavilion or two. Today’s island dream is an old shipbuilder’s cabin on Vashon Island in Washington’s Puget Sound. Designers Hoedemaker Pfeiffer wove their magic over a year, gut-renovating and reinstating the history and personality of the house. An island dream indeed!

Mid-century modern, an historic building in the Italian city of Vicenza and a bold use of colour. It’s a heady mix especially in the hands of interior architect Giacomo Totti. There is the dignity of the centuries old shell, the lightness of the furniture and the drama of colour all combining to create a fabulously chic apartment.

Pattern on pattern and a kaleidoscope of colour. Antiques and family hand me downs reloved. Books and flowers from the garden, pleated fabric lampshades, plenty of brown furniture and an army of floor rugs. The English do it so so well. Berkshire House by Vanrenen GW Designs.

Moody and masculine in New York’s West Village. Deliciously dark and carefully curated with open plan living and private corners. Sophisticated city living. It couldn’t be more of a contrast to the Southampton home I just featured but it’s by the same über talented designer Mark Cunningham.

It’s an American dream. No not the hustle and bustle of a city that never sleeps or a muscle car and homecoming queen. It’s a shingle clad country cottage in a verdant garden. It’s a simple yet refined family and friends sort of place with its mixture of antiques and new, wood and raffia, white with an occasional splash of black. Southhampton by Mark Cunningham.
