A cool modern kitchen

Posted on Wed, 2 Jul 2014 by KiM

I had to share this cool, modern kitchen with you all because black kitchens are a favourite of mine. I do have to say that black countertops suck, as my mom always bitches about hers, and my new house has black and I am quickly learning what a pain it is to keep streak-free. And helloooo herringbone floors that would have been so much more amazing with a light grey wash instead of yellow stain. But otherwise, a totally fab and fun kitchen by Camille Hermand Architectures (Jo blogged another one of their kitchens here). Here are some details: A family of four, with a new baby on the way, live in this large apartment in the chic 7th quarter of Paris. They wanted to the maximise space in their busy family kitchen, by fusing the existing kitchen with the adjoining dining room. To the left, the Zimbabwe black granite work surface runs parallel to the wall of full-length fitted cupboards to the right. The cupboards running under the work surface, which are made-to-measure and hand-painted in mat black emulsion, camouflage discretely the oven and hob. The remaining kitchen appliances are neatly out of sight in the full length cupboards to the right of the room. Running along the wall over the black granite work surface is cement Azulej tiling. In the centre of the full length cupboards is the breakfast hub, with plenty of space for all the necessary breakfast appliances. The back wall of the hub is covered with colourful and graphic wallpaper by Minakani Lab.

Jennifer Worts, again

Posted on Wed, 2 Jul 2014 by KiM

I came across Toronto interior designer Jennifer Worts‘ portfolio the other day and thought I would feature her work again (see previous posts here and here) because I continue to be a big fan of hers. Fresh and contemporary, elegant yet casual. Always knockout spaces.

A joint venture

Henny van Belkom and Javotte Gustafsson from Amsterdam are interior photographer/stylist duo Van Belkom Producties whom together create and capture magical spaces. I wish I could say more but I am too damn exhausted after 4 days of moving. What a dumb idea to not hire movers!

Happy Canada Day!!!!!

I am on day 4 of moving to my new house and I am so freaking exhausted. Next time I will hire some damn movers. It hurts to type for crissakes. It is Sunday night as I get these posts ready the only furniture in my new house so far is my desk and chair so I can blog. Am I dedicated to this blog or what? 🙂 Anyway, enough bitching from me. I came across the portfolio of Atlanta interior designer/art director/graphic designer Carl Mattison and this home struck a cord with me as it has some very similar features to my new home (stained glass, lots of squared edge moldings, tall ceilings…). I would kill for those floors though, and for my woodwork to be white instead of mahogany stain.

And a few extras from other projects…

Monday’s pets on furniture

Posted on Mon, 30 Jun 2014 by KiM

If you’d like to send me photos to include in next week’s pets on furniture post, please ensure your photos follow these basic rules: First, the pet must be on a piece of furniture. And said piece of furniture must be clearly visible in the photo, so it takes center stage rather than your pet. Think of it more of a photo of a great piece of furniture that you want to show off…and your pet happens to be sitting on it. And second, if the photo is too dark or unfocused it may not make the cut. Photos, your name, location and a brief description can be sent to kim[at]desiretoinspire[dot]net. Thanks!

This was our 3 months (now 4 months) old Bengal cat Mats. I think he and the Eames chair compliment one another

My regal beagle, Pippa, likes to pose (and sleep) on estate sale finds.

This is Laranja (Orange in Portuguese) an almost three years old rescued Spanish Galgo (Greyhound) sitting on a friend’s vintage wing chair that was also rescued but from the curb and then upholstered in a bright red. Laranja wasn’t forced to sit this way. She just loves to show off by sitting like a queen!
– Marta (Lisbon, Portugal)

I have so many photos of our pups on just about every piece of furniture in our house, but this chair is a favorite of theirs. Bug sits here to survey the scene and Annatto thinks it’s especially nice for napping.

this is our vintage kitty cat, Mulvey (almost 19 years old now) enjoying some sunshine on our hyacinth cane outdoor lounge.

Dudley – a shar pei and Malamute cross – loves the old fisherman’s couch, which I keep covered with one of the first scrappy quilts I made, in the front room at Caribou Hill our Edwardian home on Waterford Bridge Road, St. John’s NL.

I thought I would send you some pics of my friend Valerie’s rescued kitty – Rock –  in Johannesburg. He lived in a shelter for a year and was having some behaviour issues there and sick as well. She took pity on him and gave him this posh home and he is a wonderful companion now. This picture just makes me LOL and the last says it all.
